    Yet another use for antler....

Having done the usual rounds of knife handles, stick handles, priests, bottle openers, zip pulls, etc. I have found another use for antler - shaving brush handles.

Having switched some time ago to using a straight razor I've been trying out a number of different shaving brushes. I then had a look on the internet and, lo and behold, there are people out there offering both brush knots as well as antler handled brushes.

I had some time to spare in the workshop today so knocked up the first prototype. It looks pretty good, but I'll have to give it a few months use to see how the knot holds up and how suitable the antler really is.

The antler is from the main beam of a Sutherland red, the cap on the bottom is African blackwood, with a brass pin to secure.

Is the knot set in resin or rather Devcon?

    Nice work.

I've made well over a hundred antler handled brushes, going back at least four years.

When looked after sensibly, they are fine.

Problems occur when people treat them as they would plastic.

Really? I'd never have guessed. You need to stand a bit closer to it mate....

Nice job with the brush though.

Beautiful Dom, Plisson make a very nice horn handled brush. Have you tried making scales for the straight out of antler yet? What straight are you using? My current favourites are a pair of Joseph Rodgers 5/8 semi wedges with Ivory scales dating from 1898.
