    Shot size / range query

Evening all, I was looking over a new corner of land today and I'm not much of a shotgunner so I have a question.
There is a puddle come pond in a field where I've seen up to 15 ducks (mallard I think) but the nearest cover is 45 yards to the nearside & 70 to the far side.
The question is,is it "do-able" with a shotgun and if so what cartridge/shot size?.
I'm thinking 3" cartridge with #3 steel shot.
I like using my.22lr so would be happy to use that. It's just the odd one for the pot I'm after.
    Thanks.

If the ducks are sitting on the water you have a very small target area that will actually kill it, catch them coming or going.

Not very 'sporting' but if I was in your position is probably use the .22lr

I didn't even think re the quarry thing .
I've taken ducks that way before on a beach on the West coast. It's a stalk and quite sporting in my opinion but I have a friend who disagrees...whole other thread there if anyone wants it.

I'd like to use the shotgun really, just looked at some of those pop up hide things on bushwear so that may give me a few yards out from the cover and nearer the pond.
    Thanks for info.

He did ask about .22 rimfire lets just ignore the dangers of shooting a .22rimmy onto open water and the 1.5 mile fallout in any direction, yes any direction. So I make the assumption the duck are sitting on the water unless he is planning shooting a duck flight with the .22rimmy

A 10/22 would be just the job, 10 shots (or maybe even a banana mag of 25) as you pull through and head to find the right amount of lead
