Pretty easy process and instructions are available with various kits on market alternitivly there's a method using the animals brain to tan hide I have never tried this though as my old man is a taxidermist and usually got all the products needed. If he really wants to go to town I just had a shipment of trophies from Africa back from a tanning specialist in Germany and there like kid leather

There is to my knowledge no tannery in your area. There is a tannery called Devonia which tans skins for rugs, although I have never used them. To send it you will need to salt it heavily and post by carrier to them. However I have never used them before.

The place in Germany produces good results, if its the same place I use, but then the tanning is for taxidermy work, not rugs which is usually a different tan called Chrome tanning. This gives the rug a denser pelage and shrinks it slightly, Which is what you do not want if you are mounting the skin for a shoulder mount or full mount.

Devonia are good. I've used them a fair bit as they're local and the skins always come back looking great.

The only thing I would say, is sometimes thin summer roe skins can tear slightly and drop a bit of hair in the process. I've never had an issue with winter hides or any larger deer/sheep etc.

The company posted above would probably be better though, judging by your location...

Thanks for the link gr1ffer but he aint no mountain man so think he will choose the barrhead leather route but i might try it on a rabbit skin if i ever find any rabbits just to see how it works out .. thanks andy.

Has the skin been salted? If not, it may well already be toast.

Devonia lost 3 skins out of the last batch I sent them (the ones that did turn up were 2 months late). Mistakes happen and I would accept their loss but the 6 weeks of weekly phone calls it took me to get hold of their excuse for a manager to find out where the missing skins were with several messages left with the nice lady on the front desk and promises of return calls that never happened mean I'll never use or recommend them again which is a shame as I have put a lot of business their way in the last 12 months.
