Thread: Heavy 6.5 build

    Heavy 6.5 build

    Evening all.
In the planning stage of a "heavy" 6.5 LA repeater rifle. Not for stalking but 600 yrd target work. Thought process is either the old 6.5x55 or a long throated .260 (allowing me to seat out the 140s).
I was wondering of any one had any experience of the McMillan A2, or the Manners T2. Not wanting a stock with a butt hook, and looking to use a barrel in the 5-6lb range finished at 26", with a muzzle diameter .800-.825.

    Regards,

    HL.

If its any help I have had a couple of .260's and a .260 ACK IMP. I have used 140gr SMK, 142gr SMK and 140gr Berger Hybrids. I load at max mag length (AICS under 2.900") and all have worked extremely well. So probably no need to go long action as all mine have been on short actions (Tikka, Surgeon and Stiller).

HL. This isn't a million miles away from what you are talking about, although it is a lighter barrel.

Like mildot I've shot 142 gr SMKs as well as 140 gr A-Max. I've loaded rounds up to OAL 2.995 inches.

Gav, the AICS mags can be modded to give about 2.950" OAL.

At this length a 140gn Amax shank is level with the bottom of the case neck and the ogive just touching the lands in my T3 260.

I thought that the 6.5x55 had a long throat? They are designed to take 150gn plus. I have a Swede and love it. I'm putting a bolt action 6.5 x 55 for a 1000m steel plate challenge. I toyed with the 6.5 Creedmore but decided on a common case that most shops stock.
Any of the 6.5s will do 600m, the difference is in how they are put together and reloaded.

Very simple to achieve. and wholly dependant on your budget, Remington actions will give you the widest choice of stocks and we have a good few 6.5 barrels on the shelf. we can throat 260 rem to any length you require . The 6.5 swede if loaded to its potential in a modern action is a potent round, We will be at the Brtish Shooting Show At Stonleigh so you can have a look at some various options , or give us a call on the workshop number 01948 841021.Yours respectfully Mike Norris , Brock and Norris Custom Rifles

any of the 6.5's will be superb at 600m (and further) in a well built gun and with a long action you have a massive choice from 47 up to 6.5x284 or 6.5-06 etc

I had a macmillan A2 on my 308 , it's a superb stock and I regret ever selling it ! you cannot really go wrong with McMillan stocks in my opinion.
    Right where's those stones , I'll start !

    +1 on the A2 , do need a cheek piece with a pm2 though .

Ive a 6.5 06 devcon bedded into a manners t4a stock, ive not shot it at 600yds but I have at 1000yds, it shoots really well with 140gr vlds and 142gr smks, if 600yds is your range why not get a 6mmbr

Thank you for all the replies.

Swarovski - because I am blessed with a 6mmBR in a single shot version.

Mike - not sure that I can make the Shooting Show, but good to hear the old Swede can still hack it, if loaded to modern pressures, as that will probably be the way I go, despite some questions over case rim Dia and poss sl weaker brass at the web compared to the potential barrel eater of the 6.5x284 (which I may still consider). Will see if I can make the show, will need to move a few things around!

Tackb/Outback - Looks like I will go with the A2, although not keen on a saddle cheek piece, particularly as apparently the Manners stocks can be slow/difficult to get.

    Regards,

    HL
