Thread: New Security Advice

This advice is all very well but the criminal justice system needs to take responsibility as well. Are 5 or 8 year sentences for habitual armed criminals really appropriate? Why wait for citizens such as these to commit a murder before they receive a whole life sentence? The shooting community is doing its best, but to my mind HM Govt. needs to tackle the crooks as well!

Surely the fact that we all have to have cabinets and are asked in depth questions by the FEO about security means that we are not silly enough to endanger our sport or licences. Agreed the government need to get a grip of the criminals and any illegal posessions need harsh sentences.

How should we dry our rifles?

Lock external doors, draw curtains and do not leave rifle unattended, I'm not sure if you can use the "gun bearers" exemption to get other members of your household to clean the rifle, it would need someone brave and rich enough to fight a test case to find out.

the bearers exemption is for "bearing" the gun for the holders 'sporting purposes' only. Cleaning it falls outside this in the home environment.

The point of the guide is because some still insist on doing silly things that assists criminals to stealing their guns e.g. Leaving keys in prominant positions at home whilst having gone shopping for the day.

I guess it means 'do not leave them out to dry while you are out yourself and therefore not able to keep them out of unauthorised hands'.

    Quite so tFL.

There is more to this than meets the eye. NCA have a specific task to detect, deny, disrupt etc illegal firearms trafficking in the UK.

It is more difficult (not impossible) to get hold of illegal firearms in the UK than in many countries inside the Shengen area (who do not have the border systems we have); subsequently there is an increased threat (more recently) from serious organised criminals and, you can work this out, potentially determined terrorists who are themselves less likely to want to use traditional black market providers; you don't want to be the guy who sold guns to terrorists (Belgium), nor the person having them break into your house to take yours.

If IS and AQ networks can hack CENCOM they can find firearms owners details easily enough over the internet; the first time they are successful would probably be the last, but then too late. So the message is rather timely.

If we do our bit, which surely most of us do, a little remind for the balance can only be a good thing; not to forget a pretty impressive piece of joint working PR between BASC and a Home Office agency.

On a happier note, January is almost over
