Gunshop Experts

How and why do Gunshops tolerate the Gunshop Experts who seem to spend their life in there. You know the ones - always dressed in camo, far too overweight to even to get from their very large camo clad 4x4 into their reinforced highseat, so instead inhabit gunshops and are just rude to all the customers giving them grief over their choice of ammo, gun etc. etc. There is now more than one emporium that I won't frequent just because they are frequented by this species.

I supposewith smart phones, they can inhabit both gunshops and SD at the same time:(

It's probably a bit like training a puppy. They've let them sit in the house, on the sofa now for so long that removing them would require far more drastic action than the inconvenience warrants.

Ask them to show you their Black Dot of Doom card............that gets rid of a lot of wannabees, I've noticed

The trouble is they would ask for mine in return. I am OK as long as its clay pigeon sized dot - 6x42 scope on a combination gun off wobly sticks.

They probably do all right because they have a heavy custom built heavy barreled bench rest rifle mounted in a benchrest cradle with a mahoosive 72mm objective lense and 60x power scope (cheek weld no problem - they have the physiology to match).:D

Getting a group after clamping a rifle tight enough to crack the stock & then boasting about how good a shot you are is akin to tying your willy to a door handle & then slamming it before boasting about how long it is..........

Damn it ........ rumbled

I feel I exercised exemplary (and quite uncharacteristic) restraint yesterday when confronted by a particularly obnoxious pair.

Fat cucking funts, the lot of them. When I ask for 150gr ballisitc tips in .308, it is NOT as a result of some fickle, internet based fancy or hours spent in fevered onanism over ammunition manufacturers PR material. It is because that is the bloody bullet that works best for me and I'm not about to change just because some pompous self-appointed Gun Shop Guru has decided to favour me with his condescending wisdom.

As Heym says - one more shop I'm not going back to. Owner more keen to compare willy sizes with a pair of odious man-toads than bother to talk to a potentially paying customer.

You must let me know which one to avoid (by pm)! I was in Game & Country in Selkirk today & had the usual delightful service & he sought advice from me on ammunition, not that I was much use on this occasion.

If they did produce a "black dot of doom" target it would be one shot under a lamp at a burger box. Right after they had tipped out the pub, nailed 10 foxes, all over 300 yards, and signed up to SD under another name for the 5th time with same IP address.

This is so true, i think cammo clad numpties need to find something better to do. A few recommendations in response to their words of unrequested wisdom, which usually arrives in a very rough accent, with minimal hand movement (dried blood on them from 2 days before) and looking for the support of the shop keeper. I have had the same issues, for some reason in garden machinary places. So...

1) don't even look at them and give it the old "i think i'm just fine thanks mate"

2) when they comment further plus laughing at there own humour, continue to ignore them but look straight at the shop keeper and say " do you want this sale...."

3) if this fails walk out, take yourbusiness elsewhere.

I personally find i get the most "advice" when i am wearing my work suite (pin stripe) or my loafers.... Either way, the shop keeper SHOULD F-ING KNOW BETTER and kindly ask such experts to stop blocking their sales counters.... These experts stand around looking like they half own the place and are waiting for their cup of tea or a massive purchase (£1000's) to be put through the till. My bet is they spend less that £50 during 1 out of 5 visits.

Just out of interest, what was their reason for disapproving of this fairly conventional cartridge and bullet, and what in thier opinion would have been an acceptable choice?

123gr in .308.

"Flat as a laser, mate. Shoot to 350 no problem".

"Yes, I tried them, and didn't like them - too much mess at short range and didn't penetrate well through the shoulder".

"Oh well - got to be able to put them in the right place. Work well then".

And what I wanted to then say was "look, you jowly tw*t, the shoulder WAS the right place: last light, thick woodland didn't want it to run. Has it ocurred to you, you squinting, slack jawed toad, that I might KNOW WHAT THE F*CK I'm doing?"

I think in a lot of cases if you show you know what you're talking about (generally just by asking for the stuff you actually need) the numpties belt up as they realise they'll quickly be found out........

I was with Mungo and he did bite his tongue very well - so much so I thought he might bite through it. Could nt help starting this discussion though!!!!;)

Maybe a whole NEW thread... what gunship experts have told me? In truth there are some things you do benefit from but I'm trying hard to think.

Things the gunship WORKER have told me are:

Imperial Sizing Wax is best. True.

Redding Carbide Sizing Balls almost entirely eliminate need for inside lubing case necks. True.

Things the gunshot EXPERT have told me:

Nothing.... because I have nothing to learn..

Nothing.... because I am that man.

Nothing... because when it comes to such I suffer from ESHD (Elective Selective Hearing Deficiency)

Being quite new to the big boys toys, I have listened to loads of these people whilst purchasing what I wanted and checked out later on here or via internet what was true and who was :stir: the Sh!t, there was a younger guy than me in at the RFDs and these guys where trying to tell him all about shooting, funny as feck when he told them what he had been shooting whilst at home in America and what he had shot growing up, very impressive indeed and loads of pictures on his phone with him and his dad. Ultimately I am the one assessing everything and making the decision to pull the trigger at the end of the day, I did find that there where a lot of older guys that talked the talk but found out later that they do not have any permissions to speak of themselves or taken any deer either and one of my now friends {farmer} had a lot of experience in shooting and stalking going back over 40 years and is basically an encyclopedia of shooting to me and if am stuck I can always ask 6pointer. The guy I used to shoot with had shot 3 deer in all the time that I was out with him and he used to tell me about this and that and a lot of what he had told me was bull and these are the people who make an erse of it for less experienced shooters, when he asked me the other day about how I was getting on, think he was a bit embarrassed when I told him I had shot over 20 deer on my various permissions last year and he well and truly knew he had made an erse of burning his bridges with me in taking his son onto my permission to shoot. Knowledge is power but the wrong teaching of bad practices or incorrect information could cause a lot of problems.

And then there's my nearest Cabelas whose employees are just barely tolerated by the customers. I got into a minor tiff with one of the employees who was insanely rude to me and I asked if he was a 'gun-pro' and when he indicated he was, I told that I'd listened to him advise customers and was under the opinion he truly wasn't. In fact, I told him, his main talking points seem to be whatever was featured in Shooting Times magazine the previous month. He didn't deny it.~Muir

I don't think that the "experts" are as bad as they were. I worked part time in a large Store at Narrabeen in the 80's it was an old picture theatre & we usually had over 2000 firearms on the shelves & had a shooting range upstairs. There was a specialised archery section, scuba /spearfishing, line fishing, camping & a general sports/beach section. It was a family business & I doubt it ever made a profit, but the owner was a terrific bloke & it was an interesting place to work. We had the regulars who propped up the counters on weekends & late night shopping. How I wish I'd kept a diary. We staff actually had to have a skill set to work in this place, so we did know a little (Australian champions in archery & spearfishing just off the top of my head) & we had some terrific stories & extraordinary claims from the "expert guests" as we liked to call them.

I believe that access to good info is much easier with the inter web now & the "guru's" know it too. I doubt that anyone would claim now that they could hit a deer running flat out at 400m with their custom remchester & 30 x scope. These types of claims were run of the mill in a gun shop 30 years ago. Same with fishing, before the internet & cameras in phones every shark encounter was with an angry 14ft tiger or white. Ah, those were the days.
