Quietest fox round

Got asked this today, didn't know the answer, thought I'd ask you lot.

P.S. I take the question to be what is the quietest round suitable to take a fox (which round may or may not be suitable for other things).

Excluding a moderated .22rf (which in my humble opinion is not really suited to the job unless you are close, competent and going for head shots) I would say possibly a moderated larger calibre such as a 308. However, assuming you mean a 'normal' moderated centrefire round then probably something like a Hornet or anything which uses a relatively small charge of powder should moderate well and not be excessively loud. I have to say that I'm well impressed with the relatively low report of my .17Rem fitted with a .25 cal Ase Utra S5 mod. Despite the fact that it uses roughly the same amount of powder as my .222 it does seem to my aging ears to be quite a bit quieter when fitted with the same mod for some reason?

To answer this one is easy the moderated .22lr with subsonic bullets. Yes we know it's on the low powered side but for close range, less than 80 yds I have dispatched many an cunning reynard........

I have 4 rimfires calibres and a .222
I use the same moderator on all of them, a PES T12 Scout

apart from the .22lr shooting subsonic the .222rem (shooting 50gr VMax with 22.2gr N133) is quieter than the .22WMR, .17HMR and .17Mach2

although no fox has ever complained about the noise!

+1 why shoot them long range when u Can call them in and ambush them:)

Possibly the .22 Hornet but as I could never take a thread cutter to my Anschutz 1432 I guess I'll never know.

man up and do it lad!!! lol

i get my hornet this week ive had a bang of it afore i said i would take it and its quite a bang from it so its straight to the gunsmith for screw cuting for me and hopefully its gonna be super quite!

I bought a 1432 in .22LR many years ago. Beautiful rifle but I did have it screw cut ! Always fancied the Hornet version.

they do advise that you shouldn't use the same mod on a rimmy and centre fire....unburnt powder from the rimmys could ignite from the .222

My 17hmr with the ASE utra mod is quieter than my modded .222

MAYBE LOST ON SOME BUT

45 ACP in a Delisle Carbine but a bit specialised and close range

...I was thinking on similar lines, but something that worked: saw a Winchester 94 lever action at Bisley a while back, chambered for 45 Colt, with a moderator fitted.
Driving a nice lead 255gr Keith bullet at about 1000fps = fox medicine

Then you must be using those squib loads that stick in the barrel. In all honesty my.222rem was much quieter than any .17hmr I have come across. The .17hmr has quite a bark to it.
