new 22-250

OK so my very accurate Tikka T3 stainless synthetic has gone to continue it's fox destruction program with a new owner.
I'm up for a new rifle, I've already filled in the one for one variation.
Some background info. Its mainly going to be used for foxing, 50% walking, 50% from a truck, but I do have other rifles I can use. I have been reloading for nearly 15 years and really enjoy the challenge. I'm left handed but quite like a left hand stock right hand action. I'd like something a bit different but it has to be super accurate.
In think I've narrowed it down to two choices.
I looked at a Sauer 202 Syncro XT or Wolverine and equivalent Blaser, but they were too much money and didn't suit exactly wath I wanted.
The logical sensible choice:
A Sako 85 in varmint stainless or another Finnlight, more than likely with Manners or Robertson. I'd like a GRS but you can't get a right hand action, left hand one for an 85, so maybe a Joe West or Parmoor.
The 'I've always fancied one' choice
Ackley improved blue printed Remington action, heavy fluted stainless border barrel, nice trigger with a GRS, Manners, Robertson etc. Hopefully not ending up too heavy.

What do you think?

50% walking - sure you want a varmint barrel? I pose as a question rather than an answer because I'm going through just that though process, without conclusion.

A very nice semi custom or custom rifle could be built for the same money as the Sauer or Blaser, there is a good read on ukv "22-250rem pushing 69 sierra tmk @ 3640"
nice foxing rifle could be something like a tikka or sako action, bedded in to a pse stock (e-tac?), ai bottom metal and a custom barrel and your choice of optic and mod= very nice....

On stock - you can buy a GRS left hand blank and self inlet/bed it - although I thought they did do LH stock, RH action. On barrel, I carry a varmint in a GRS - not light, but I too like the accuracy etc over the weight.

AI in 22.250 gives relatively little extra (about 100 fps?), but that's your call. I'd buy the custom that you want - really makes it yours IMO.

Thanks for the discussion, really appreciated.
What attracted me to the Blaser/Sauer was the fact when I've had my fussy out of it there's a ready 2nd hand market. What really makes me question the decision of a custom is exactly the opposite, they're just my view of a perfect rifle and are worth next to nothing as a percentage of their build cost.
I suppose the Sako with a aftermarket stock is a halfway house. I can have a good shooting rifle with a stock that suits me, keep the original mint and when I've had enough put it back to standard.
I've tried the Sako 85 GRS option, they don't do one unless you want to custom inlet it, not really a problem as I'd want it pillar bedding.
The only reason I'm tempted by the Ackley is it's a bit specialist, and I like reloading. I've got different calibre rifles if I need more grunt or speed.

I went down the route of Sako 85 varmint and put it in a SSS left hand stock, going to change barrel next year, cheers

My pet 22-250 AI load consisted of a 52 grain A-max over a charge of Vit 540 for an average MV of 4200fps, i had 35 grain bergers up to 4890fps, both loads are substantially more then the 100fps stated Ian.

You will like the 22-250 AI its very fast and flat shooting, out of a 26 inch barrel it will easily do 4300fps with 50grn bullets over a case full of slow burning Vit double base powder such as 540 or 560, like you handlaoding is a major part of the overall hobby for me. If you do chose to go down that route you will need a 1:14 twist barrel for bullets up to 55grns and a faster twist for anything heavier but not too fast, otherwise if you do decide to shoot lighter bullets they might disintegrate due to being over spun. The only reason i dont have one anymore is because i fancied a change so i re-barreled to 22BR a couple of years ago. Ian.

I have an old M77 in 22-250 that I love to bits - it has a heavy-ish barrel in a not-short length though, and after a while walking it gets rather heavy!

Bought it second hand for not a huge amount of money thinking I'd just see whether I was bothered about 22-250 as a caliber, and now would probably have it as the last gun Id part with :)

I'm up for a new rifle,

If you can find a new one that shoots as well as the old one, that should be enough to keep you happy :D
Good luck!

Hi llwynog, mine was pillar bedded by Danny at SSS, I love the stock, solid well made, was around £1000 though, cheers
