need help anyone using n-150 in 25-06 with sierra 90 grain hollow point boat tails, getting conflicting data viht giving max at 44.9 grains and a reloading web site giving 51.5 as max, anyone have any hands on experience, any help much appreciated thanks

Go with the viht data. It's 38.7-44.9 for 87gr bullet in the Lee book. I don't think that the powder is best suited for the cartridge.

I'd agree..Viht. N150 - not the best propellant for .25-06... H4831 or close similar with a 90gn bullet. ATB

Thanks guys I'll change powder it's just that I had a kilo of it and wanted to use it up

You can of course use it. The Viht. data is there for the 90gn bullet...it's just that it isn't the best choice of propellant, lagging behind somewhat in terms of MV it'll produce. But you can use it.
Thing is though, a .25-06 thrives on MV so the propellants producing top end MV will always work best. But the 90gn bullet most certainly should work with the 1-10 twist most .25-06 rifles have.

deeangeo your rignt about the mv im going to try some n160 its close to reloader 19 in the burn rate, trying to get away from the american powders as its hard to find down this end of the country due to the americans not shipping much over.viht powders are quite easy to get hold of so want to switch to viht n160 ill keep the n-150 for my 308 thanks again

OK but you can also take a look at Ramshot 'Accurate 4350' propellant. Made in Belgium. Cheaper too! I know Krank imports the stuff, don't know who else, but I think it's viable powder although don't have personal experience if it. If their Accurate 4350 is a comparison to IMR4350 or H4350 it should be good..especially at £32/34 a lb. As a max load they list 3472 fps with 24" barrel & 54gns Accurate 4350.

Just put it through QL based on coal of 3.122 and 20 inch barrel. You would expect a max load if 54.2gr and an MV of 3254fps. This is with 100% efficiency so not a bad choice. Not sure if that is the MV you are after. If you let me know the specifics of your rifle, barrel length, twist rate and what coal you intend I can be more accurate.

Quickload is a computor modelled prediction program not actually derived velocities from firing said bullets, i would not reccommend 54.2 of Vit 150 it is way over most published data, for instance the Sierra manual says 49.2 max for a 90grn bullet.
Stick to the books, that way you know that the load published is going to be safe in your rifle

Ian.

QL never let me down. Most books always er on the side of caution. Any sensible loader would start at 10% below max and work up looking after every round for signs of pressure.

big ears i will stick with published data at the moment until i have had the rifle for a while, going to try n-160 it will suit the velocity better.whitebeard is right stick to the data then theres no problems would not be happy about loading 54.2 grains when vhit state that 44.9 grains of n-150 is max.n-160 suits the 25-06 better i understand that its close to reloader 19 in the burn rate chart, big ears yor right about loading 10%under max then play about thanks for the input guys all good points

Hi Jason I'd agree about the IMR powders (4831 in particular) and N-160. I have a batch of 100gr sierra game kings made up for the first time with N-560 which I will shoot in a fortnight. These are based on Viht website data. I'll let you know how I get on if you like?

I've had some mindblowing results with IMR4831, Fed 210's and 110gr Hornady Interbonds. This was based on Nosler 110gr load info and at the low end too.

As everyone has said start about 10% low and work up looking for pressure signs. Have fun.

My 25/06 has a 26.5" barrel and really likes ADI 2217 with 100 grain and heavier bullets it is sold by Hodgdon as H1000 and is equivalent to Vhit N170,
I did some load development for a Tika T3 22" barrel with RL22 58.0 gr with a Nosler 110 Accubond 3185 fps, 51.6 gr 115 Berger 2930fps
the loads are near max so work up, both shot 3 shot groups under .5" at 100 metres.

Leadwasp be interested how you get on,my mate let me have some n160 to try it says max was 54.8 so started at 53 grains going to try them this week,in my new tikka t3.shooternz thanks for the info would like to stick with the Viht powders because it's easy to get hold of not much choice on the powders selection down here.atb jason

Jason are you sure you are looking at the correct reloading data? post#14 conflicts with post#12

N150 max's out way before your suggested starting load of 53grains in the powder manufactures data.

or am I missing something?

i,d be interested to hear how you get on with the n160 with 100grain heads

I am using N160 with ,270 100gr bullets
load development so far is good
all the charge levels are producing groups of around an inch

only using them as I have 400 bullets I can't shift!
