H4895 sounds good , i currently use n150 in both but . in the 308 the n150 is fine but im struggling to get velocity using n150 and a 100 grain bullet in 243
Dave. While there are options for selecting a single powder, my recent experience is that I need to focus on getting the right powder for the bullet that I have picked for my rifle. Also, how I reload and test influences the results. In my 260 Rem I now have 4 loads that meet my requirements, using RL-19, H4350 and N165. I am just about to start load development for my new (to me) 243 AI, and I will be looking to try RL-19 and H4350 first. If they don't work for the 87gr bullets I plan to use, I will go back to the Hornady manual and see what else they recommend. I like the way the Hornady manual allows you to assess what powders work for a given bullet.
In summary, get a load that works for you in one of the rifles, then do the same again for the other rifle. If you end up with the same powder, then that's great.
To get the best results you will probably end up using two powders.
H4895 and varget work great in the 308 and also in the 243 with lighter bullets.
If you want top velocity with 100 grain bullets you will need to use a slower powder like vit n160 or h4350.
