So I can budget around £1500 for a .243 setup (rifle, optics, mounts, mod).

What would people advise?

Second hand C.Z. or Parker Hale rifle £250-£400. May get one with mounts but if not Warne mounts are good but not sure how much, mine cost £50 years ago. 6x42 Leupold second hand £250, Wildcat Pre. 8 mod £200. Comes in at less than a grand spend the rest on stalking, simples;)
Tusker.

Rifle: Tikka T3 lite £725 (best new price on gun trader)
scope: Schmidt and Bender 8x56 £350 secondhand
Rings: Sako optilock one piece rings £100 ish SAKO OPTILOCK Ring mounts
mod: Atec Maxim £250 ish
Bi-pod: Harris BRM £60 secondhand.

This is the set up I would have if starting out again.

This is what I found on guntrader within 30 seconds... #2 is my favourite rifle, but #3 has a Zeiss scope and better mod (in my opinion)

I bought a 2nd hand CZ, with T8,sling and scopes £595.00. Got 12 months guarantee and I was told if I wasn't happy with grouping I could return for full refund. Borders Gun Room .

Sounds a good deal. Cannot see how it can get much better than that.

...and a lot of neglect, shooting isn't the only way to finish a barrel off.

indeed, I saw a rifle in good condition the other day, but the owner had left the mod on at all times, which had caused such bad pitting in the barrel it was getting scrapped. pity really...mind, another reason why mods are not a good thing ;)

apart from the hideous thing that is on the end of a fine barrel, that is a rifle/setup of a lifetime (ie. it will last you a lifetime and you will remain very pleased with it).

Agreed - add £300 for a Hardy Gen IV and it's all you'll need (until you want a Sako 75 in 6.5x55mm of course!!)
