17 hmr Barrel Rods ?

Certainly happens with .22lr rounds, end of a day at the range one rod cleaned 8 or 9 rifles and that was the end of that rod.

Neil.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. I guess the larger the bore, the larger the force to the side. I only use mine for 17

With certain cleaning regimes you do not want any brass on the rod or the jag as the cleaner on the patch changes colour to show if there is any brass or contamination left in the barrel, I use the bore tech rod with a nylon jag

Bore Tech V-Stix plus Proof positive jag.
The rod has a covering that stops damage to the barrel that plain metal rods can cause.

After much ado, today I bought a Parker hale rod and a pack of VFG quick clean pellets. The rod has a swivel handle, and is a one piece coated steel. No need at this time for any JAGS as it will easily just push the mini tampon looking things through the bore with its male flat screw end. ( or blocked round )

So I don't over clean, it will be a quick drop of oil and a quick push through after shooting. Followed when the barrel gets really dirty and the groupings start to open up with Hoppes no.9 and a more intensive cleaning session.

Thank you all for your suggestions and comments. Helping me decide on the following purchase. Big bores are easy, bore snake and 4x2. But small bores seem to be very much down to so much personal opinion, so its been good to hear of a few new ones.

I've got a Parker Hale .17 cleaning rod. Got it at my local RFD. So they do make 'em. I see they are advertised on the Sportsman Gun Centre site. Steel with a coating of what I guess is plastic. Works fine and dandy for me.

Ah, they say the coating is acetate.

when i started shooting my 17 rem 28 years ago, i couldnt find a cleaning rod here in the uk, so i ordered 2 from the usa, at that time parker hale didnt make one for a 17 cf, they did make them for air rifles which i was only pointing out were 177 not 172 cal, as my friend found out years ago trying to clean his 17 cf he knackered the barrel up big time, if now p hale make one thats great i didnt know, i didnt want the o,p, doing any damage to his rifle dave.

You’re absolutely right, Dave. I will add that a few minutes with a bit of fine sandpaper reduces the Parker-Hale .177 rods below .172 easily!

cheers matey, im not knocking p hale, but as you know, their are better rods out there, only trying to help. bs

We all spend quite a lot of money on our rifles, why on earth don't people spend a little bit more on the right equipment to look after them?!

I've read about some pretty 'whacky' ways of cleaning rifles on the SD. Instead of waiting for groups to open up keep the barrel in good condition all the time, less fouling and filth in the barrel is strangely a good thing.

I would advise against ever using ammonia based products and never mix products of differing chemical composition, this should be obvious. There are some good systems out there, Bore Tech and VFG as examples, they're good and have been designed from the ground up. Bore Tech is my preference and it has some pretty high profile followers.

Boresnakes are fine but not as an everyday cleaning tool, they can over time damage the crown if not used precisely.

So, spend the hard earned cash on a good cleaning system and happy, accurate shooting!

No problem with ammonia, gets shot of the copper quickly - you just need to know how to use it. As to barrel rods for my 17Rems, made my own CF ones.
