204 Ruger sub sonic load?

Sorry but on some of my perms they must have microphones. Had several complaints when I have shot foxs well.over 100yds away. Always shot away from properties. Many sleep with window open.
On one perm farmer almost always hears shots if I am on the farm house side of the farm.
Alot depends on terrain and ground hardness and prevailing wind.
On my free range hen unit farmer sleeps with windows open all weather and he often hears a shot. Not always me!
On another egg unit it's surrounded on two sides by houses
Hence the thought of the possibility of sub sonic .204 for the occasional fox.

Let them complain, what they going to do about it?
No one has the right to total silence, they can always shut their windows, ware bed ears or just stop being a bunch of moaners.
Tell them to move back to town if the county side is to much for them.

Enthusiasts have been loading carts. up and down since they were invented and it ain’t gonna change anytime soon.
Stick with your vanilla if you want but no need to scoff at different ideas.

I totally agree with this.

Much of my fox control work is done fairly near houses, generally where the owner of the land lives. It is extremely rare for them ever to hear either the 243 or the 204.
In several situations, I am probably no more than forty or fifty yards from the house yet they don't hear a thing. It was a bit different in the old days when we would be shooting rabbits at night with a substantial number of shots from a 12 bore, and then quite a few would hear us. With a rifle, it's usually just a single report (hopefully) and it just doesn't seem to register

I would agree with Smelly, with double glazing, TV and the like it's not surprising the odd rifle shot goes unnoticed.

Incidentally, we no longer shoot rabbits at night on most of the farms with the 12 as invariably people, (newcomers mainly) complain or even ring the police. A sad reflection on how the countryside has changed!
Hi Mike
Sign of the times now, one area I help my buddy out, when the fallow season starts in earnest we all ( this season) have a chest camera to keep everything straight and on another whole estate they wear them as soon as they arrive even if it’s just a high seat inspection. ( estate RAMS are the reason - complaint resolving apparently)

Things are slowly turning, noise is one issue, the main one is the culling or practice and to be honest loads of people are fantastic with their right regarding footpath and pooch control and it works, then there’s the others the work in progress 🙄 most couldn’t care 2 hoots about environment protection they just kick off because of media brainwash syndrome something you won’t win but work to keep a lid on it

Personally I do try and keep it all respectful and be part of, up to a point, reducing noise is always going to be there, planning on where and what time helps, letting a 22.250 rattle off 2 shots 50 yds from a house midsummer @ 01.30 ain’t gonna be favourable
Using a smaller but suitable caliber helps and a early visit all helps, one place i had a problem with ‘ I’m calling the police” I got a CAD number next time I went there and give this guy a pen and paper showed him the kent police cad on my i pad and told him to ring up the police and give them the number, they will sort you out
I’ve never seen them on the ground since period

Do your bit to help reducing noise, but at the end of the day, you have permission, all legal doing an essential job, just politely stand your ground, everyone can walk a footpath at anytime, try to work it out is a help

I shoot on farms that some of the houses have been sold off to non farming types. I use a 243 at night for my foxing. I’ve had one guy come out after I’ve shot a fox and that’s it. I never shoot towards a house always away from it. Whether others have reported me to the police, I don’t know. Before I go out I always inform the police what I’m doing. I know others won’t and never will but I don’t mind, saves me any hassle

If a 40 or a 42grain .22 RF sub-sonic isn't 'enough gun', how will a .20 cal 40 or worse, 32grain bullet be any better if it's also sub-sonic ? It's the energy that kills.

In all the years I'll wager that as many, if not more, foxes have been killed with a .22 rimmy than just about any other calibre rifle you can name.

Learn to call Charlie in until it's within 'Certain' range and put a .22 rimmy in his head. He'll be just as dead as if you'd hit him with a cannon ;)

I just re-read the OP. Why worry ? A very occasional disturbance is something we all have to put with in this world. Let them put up with it on the probably rare occasions when you are close enough to be heard.
As for a sub-sonic .204 .. I still wouldn't bother.

Chances are that the fox you leave tonight because it's close to a house will be the one you shoot tomorrow 4 fields away anyway.
