Hi, needing to pick up a moderated shotgun to sort out a little issue on one of my farms,
Looking at a 20g as heard they are a lot quieter and swingable than a 12 with not much lost in range
I know they make subsonic cartridges but is anyone using full fat cartridges through theres and noted a make thats particularly quiet?
I appreciate theyl never be as quiet as subsonics but also wont have the limited rwnge as subs too
I use a 410 quite a bit and suprising what i can knock out the air on a good day with normal cartridges but when switching to subs im extending the lead quite a bit and can quite often hear tge pellets clatter off their wings and dont want to fall into this trap with a 20
Thanks

Go up a shot size or 2 for the subs if you can, a heavier pellet travelling at the same speed will carry more energy

I have used all the moderated shotguns out there from singles to pumps to o/u and have to say the only moderated gun I have and use on a regular basis is the o/u 20b, it is by far the most useful and better balanced of them all.

The .410 I found to be a short range gun, the pumps were long and the moderator short which made them noisy, the 12b were cumbersome and only in single or pump.

The 20b kills and patterns out to a measured 40m with fixed 1/2 and 3/4 choke and the non selective trigger is not an issue, it is a basic gun.

I put a ruby sight on it for low light and a cheek riser in the form of a sheet of foam so it patterns where I want it to as most moderated guns shoot low.

Now as for cartridges, Please DO NOT BUY SUBSONIC, can't be clearer than that. The barrels are ported for their full length and subsonic cartridges are pathetically slow, I use 30g 5 shot as these are not going too fast, regardless of the advertising, and when put through a ported barrel are the quietest I have used.

I did make the mistake thinking 30g in 6 shot (Sipe and Eley) would be the same and my god are they loud so I just use Lyalvale Express Supreme Game Ultimate Power in 30g 5 as through the full length porting come out the end as a subsonic pop and kill to 40m.

This time of the year I love to listen to the song birds as I walk about and the moderated gun and cartridge combo means I don't need hearing protection so can enjoy the songs as can the dog.

I have to say it does get a lot of use as its 2 shot, point-able and not heavy and I don't need to use hearing protection

It may have to be second hand as Hushpower told me a few years ago that they are focusing on pump actions and singles due to the availability of tubing and the O/U 20b guns, good luck, the O/U 20b is a great tool 👍 👍

Just bought one of those at auction, not a whole lot quieter than a standard 12 with supersonic and I keep shooting low. Must get some subs to play with
Yeah, I shoot mine with my head up. Don't be afraid to see plenty barrel.
You could put a comb raiser on it!

I’ve a mossie 20g hushpower. Subsonic hushpower carts are quiet, and very quiet when standing a few yards away in comparison with normal carts. Shooting it though, I can’t tell the difference in noise.

Best overview of moderated shotguns I have ever read. I completely agree and will be getting one of these ASAP. I have a single shot fully moderated Baikal Stealth and with 3" magnums (not subsonic) is completely silent... but - its single shot, not a lot of good for pigeon, crows... but still useful. You can't silence a 12g no matter what you do with it unless you use subsonics and they are pants as you describe. Only draw back apart from the uglyness is 20g cartridges are dearer than 12's as they are not produced in such large numbers. Thanks so much for the ammo tip as well.... brill
