Advice please: bought a sauer 101 a couple of years ago and never really used it. Previous owner only fired 50 bullets max but advised me that rifle liked the 40g hornady vmax bullets. I tried my RFD and they said that they have been discontinued. Does anyone know if this is the case? I tried a few 50 grain and groups where all over the place tbh

I think a 1-14 twist is pretty optimum for 50-52 grain bullets in a 22/250. Certainly as long as I do my part the bullets go where intended. Are you shooting factory or home loaded ?

Mine is a 1-14 twist and shoots 40 to 55-grain bullets perfectly. If you start reloading I can highly recommend the Sierra 55g soft point 1365, cracking bullet sent at about 3600fps. Like Sika98k has mentioned, a 1-14 twist is perfect for 50ish grain bullets.

Just before Xmas I finally had chance to visit a 100yd pipe range with the new Tikka T3X, the Federal 40gr Vmax were producing pretty good groups but not as good as the Hornady 55gr Vmax. I did manage to get some Norma 50gr Vmax and they were superb, clover leafing at 100 yds. TBH for the price I paid for them I will see if they have another 100 and just stick with them.

Hello from Australia, where it's quite warm. My experience with the 40gn Vmax has been really positive in my 222, however I've just acquired a Tikka Varmint in 22.250, and so far the 55gn Sierra HPBT is looking great. Could be a bit rough on foxes though.

Follow up question guys. I’m from Northern Ireland and RFD although there are a few normally have a limited selection of rifle ammo. They tend to share out consignment from main dealer. Can you buy ammo from mainland 🇬🇧 and get it shipped to a RFD just like a firearm….?

Young Guns aren’t a million miles away from you. They should have a good stock. Further afield is Hollow Farm in Comber or Tannyoky in Poyntzpass.
