22-250 or 204 ruger

Remember that the 20 is not a legal deer Cal in England / wales but the 22-250 is on muntjac and CWD. If that matters ? The 20 reger has a better BC bullets though but if your not pushing the envelope ?

The 22-250 will send a heavier bullet at 204 speeds but with a lot more retained energy down range and less wind drift. Zero one inch high at 100yds and you’re good for point and shoot out to 250yds.
A 222 would shoot similarly, had one for years, shot hundreds of foxes with it, the majority if them headshots. No doubt a 22-250 will kill foxes but it's not a cost effective method of doing it

222 has always been my foxing calibre or the 22 hornet for donkeys nyears

Now I still use them 222 muntjac and geese culls 22 hornet short range foxing and rabbiting

Now its the 204 absolutely stonker of a calibre particularly if your just sitting up waiting its phenomeal

I don't shoot the ranges compared to some, 222 150-80 yds, with the 204 with a hawke scope and a pard 007/ mk3 vulpine behind it, I nail foxes 240 yds with ease, for me that is far enough - the 204 would go a lot lot fuirther, if you can get a chance to shoot it on a range you will be amazed on the range and knockdown

I use 35p of powder in my 22-250 loads, even if I managed to halve that by using a smaller chambering, I would be saving 17p per fox. After spending a sum that I would never admit to my wife on foxing kit, Is there really an argument for using a smaller cartridge based on economy?

Had 22-250 over 20+ years same rifle still does business all but tweaked about now
Don’t dismiss 223 had a fox on mates shoot whilst stalking few weeks ago chasing birds round a pen ranged at 270 yards stoned it no recoil cheap ammo 😜

Do you chase the cheapest petrol at the pumps

No, but the fuel used to get you to where you go foxing will vary by significantly more than the cost of the ammo based purely on how you drive on any given journey.
That's not my point, unless your using your rifle for deer in reality using a 22-250 is ike using a hammer to crack a nut

I had 4 foxes last night, 120m - 225.
Tikka T3 lyte 32grn Hornady over 26.5 grns of Exterminator. Cheap to load.
All bang flop. Virtually no recoil, much quieter than the 22-250.
Can't fault it.

Having had both id say there's nothing in it. Both shoot flat, both you need to know your drop. Animals died just the same with each.

Not used a .204 and no doubt that it's a capable round that does the job 👍 but the highlighted above is probably the ONLY advantage of using something else for foxing other than a .22/250. Pennies on reload is neither here nor there and TBH I have not heard a .204 fired to know the difference.

I’m looking at one of these can anyone with experience of one or the other, good bad etc what to look for barrel length etc. thanks
I love the 22,250 no experience of the 204 but i have used a 20 practical also superb Fox firearms have some new Howa 204s at superb prices

Previously owned a .204 and shot mainly 32gr though it, I sold it because I was getting frustrated with the amount of foxes that I'd hit and then run off and never find or find the next morning.

After speaking to a few guys after I'd sold it, they reckon I'd had a bad batch of bullet heads that were expanding too much on impact and not penetrating enough.

Who knows, it could have been my shot placement but it was happening far too frequent for my liking so I sold it and bought a 243 which I use with 58gr's and not had one run off since.

There will be many opinions varying greatly.
Some right. Some wrong, below is mine.
I'm a lucky chap, I have the choice of .22 fac pcp .22lr .17hmr, .204 ruger, .243 win and a .308 win.
All excluding the pcp are used at some time on foxes.
I have no use for a 22-250. Because.
Use of copper aside .204 and .243 will sort anything in the UK, bar boar. Boar being the reason I was granted a .308. If I was forced to reduce my rifle numbers.
I would always stick with the .22 fac pcp, .204 and .308. If not, for non lead, I would go .243 not .308.
So, 22-250 or .204 ruger?

If you want to shoot any deer, .204 is not for you.
If you want to shoot all species of deer, 22-250 is not for you.
If you want to shoot foxes, rabbits etc.
.204 every time.
If you want to shoot all deer species, foxes, etc
My advice, go for 2 rifles. .204 and .243.
If you think you will want to shoot all deer using non lead get a .204 and a .308.
Good luck with your choice.

I shoot both cartridges at the same quarry, I tell myself the 204 will save barrel life on the 22-250's I have 2 normal and 1 AI version, reality is I wanted the 204 in the platform 1V Ruger no1 because its elegant. I do like the less noise of the 204. I also shoot a .223 rem at the same quarry as the others, the Savage being a faster twist barrel allows experiments with heavy for caliber projectiles. All will kill fox and here coyote, the 223 will handle projectiles suitable for our pronghorn and deer should I chose to do so. I like longer barrels. It is all about what you prefer in the end.
