22-250 twist

My load for 69s is with imr4166 but i can't get it more so i tested couple of loads with Vectan TU5000 and is very promising, tried rl17 as well but not grouping well. My barrel is 22"

I had a Bergara HMR with 24 inch 1 in 9 barrel, It shot ok but I could never get book velocities with it which I put down to the fast twist . From memory it was shooting 73g Tmk,s at 2950 FPS on max charges with two different powders. People with .223 ,s were telling me they were getting that . Even the 53g v max would only do 3500 range. Just bought a .204Ruger and loving it for fast flat shooting and almost no recoil so the shot impact can be seen. would not want a 22/250 again would go .243 , more versatile .

A dealer here in the U.S. arranged to import a short run of Tikka T3x Lites in .22-250 with a 1-in-8" twist in 2017. I've developed quite a bit of load data with Barnes 62-grain TSXs and TTSXs pushing 3400 FPS+.

I don’t own a 22-250. Never thought about the cartridge much until the last five years or so. I have a .223/5.56 AR-15 and a bolt action .243 so a .22-250 seems a bit redundant. The AR never gets used, when I bought it seven years ago I mounted a scope, sighted it in and haven’t shot it since. I’ve had my .243 a long time and its used exclusively for predators-coyote, bobcat and gray fox with two exceptions noted below. The 87 grain bullets I use also work fine on deer and hogs, which I’ve shot as targets of opportunity when predator hunting. If specifically hunting deer I use a larger diameter cartridge of which I have several, if specifically hunting hogs I use a Marlin 336.

So to make a short story long I don’t have a .22-250, don’t need one, but the last couple of years I’ve become enamored with the cartridge and concurrently started preferring heavy for caliber bullets. If I get a .22-250 it will have to at least be a semi-custom because I’ll want a 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel.

A previous post mentioned a dealer in the USA who had a manufacturer(Tikka) make a special run of 1:8 twist .22-250’s. The dealer was Whittaker Guns and they sold like hot cakes. The drawback is of course if you’re not a handloader a fast twist .22-250 has no advantage over a slower twist .22-250.

To me a barrel with a twist faster than needed is eminently better than a barrel with a twist slower than needed.

Having had 2 tight twist 22.250 rifle and currently having a 8 twist 22 BR, I can tell you from experience that the combination of the larger 22.250 case , behind a high BC bullet is an awesome combination.

There are too many naysayers that are too quick to dismiss something which they have little experience of, and obviously are not aware of what a properly turned out 22.250 can do , when firing high BC bullets .

For vermin shooting out to 600 yrds it is one of the best calibres I have used. One only need do the maths to see that shooting a 77 grn TMK at 3300fps will out perform most things. The 22.250 had a ballistic advantage on both my 6BR and 243 at these ranges

Another tick in the box for me , is that an 8 or 9 twist 22.250 will also shoot 53 / 55 grain pills with no loss of accuracy. So what we end up with , is one of the best foxing calibres on the planet - that is more than capable of consistently taking out long range vermin. A calibre that has quality reloading components that are easily to get hold of and a huge choice of factory ammo if needed.

I am aware there are several manufactures the produce factory rifles with a 9 twist, Savage (model 12) and the Bergara HMR being the most obvious. Other than that, get an 8 twist custom tube fitted and enjoy.

Hi there , I've just got a 1 in 8 twist T3 22-250 , 26 inch barrel , I plan to use 69gr tmks , maybe even 60gr nosler BT.Sayubg that , will I see a massive loss in velocity with factory 55gr ?

Makes perfect sense, sounds awesome. I've always liked fast twist .243's my mate has a Krieger barrel which shoots 108g eld match insanely accurately. 3300fps with a .22 tmk sounds an awesome combo, hell if it were legal for deer it would make a cracking head and neck shooter. The ft lb in energy is there, just not the diameter ☹
The 0.02 makes all the difference to the deer.

Same mass, same velocity, same expansion, same cost.... verboten !

you are definitely correct 1-9 it is yet web site says different thanks for pointing that out
The situation with barrel twist in 22-250 Bergara B14 HMRs is a bit complicated.
Until a year or so ago, they were 1 in 9 twist and there are still a few of these new in various shops in the UK.
However, the barrels made by Bergara in Spain changed to 1 in 14 twist and that's what they come with now
The Premier HMR Pro (which is made in the USA) still has a 1 in 9 twist barrel
The B14 Sporter Varmint also has a 1 in 9 twist barrel

Cheers

Bruce

Thanks for that Bruce, looks like mine is new but old stock then.
nice to have the option to go a bit heavier on the bullet if I wish.
I can't fault it with the 55g I'm using at the moment.

If you find a fast twist 22-250 enjoy! Simply no reason to not shoot heavies if the twist rate allows. bonus being they will launch faster than the same in 223.:tiphat:

I re barrelled mine in a 1-8” twist I think it’s fantastic and would highly recommend it. You can still shoot light bullets but it opens up the door for copper bullets and I use the 69grn tmk’s which I think is a great fox bullet

I am in the process of ordering a tikka super varmint in 22.250, I am after information with any pros and cons on the standard 1/14 twist and or the 1/8 twist they offer.

Will be used for Charlie’s mostly

14 twist should cover most factory ammo.

I would go for 1:8 to cover all bases if you're likely to reload, so that you can use the higher BC bullets like 53gr V-max, 69gr TMK etc for better ballistics.

8 tw 22/250 works superbly with 75g bullets

Had one for years , very effective and accurate
