.223 options for foxing

Looking for recommendations on a .223 foxing setup

I’m tempted by a 16inch barrel plus moderator and something reasonably lightweight as most of my shooting is from a truck or would be on foot.

Do I go for a 16 or do I look at maybe and 18 or 20?

Any opinions on a rifle or barrel lengths etc would be appreciated.

Thinking to top it off with a DNT Zulus or Alpex 4K

I’ve never quite understood these threads
I’ve shot foxes with a T3 long barrel
A CZ stutzen
A semi automatic shotgun
A CZ 22 bolt action
A 22 magnum Ruger
A 243 Tika ( more than one )

Basic rule is whatever kills foxes and you like how it looks and feels

Current whip is a T3x lite in a KRG bravo chassis with a HIK alpex 4k
Whatever floats your boat

Handle a few different rifles and see what takes your fancy

My preference is 20” barrel for .223, still handy enough with a mod on

This is always the starting point. Find a rifle that fits you first. Barrel length no big issue. I shoot foxes with either a 60cm or a 57cm barrel. Both of them do the job :)

Cheers

What sort of distance is your average shot?

If it’s 100-200 yds then go short and light but it’s all about personal preference really, the main thing is to get to know your rifle and how it shoots.

I used to use a Tikka T3, great rifle, light and accurate without being too expensive, if you’re out in the rain much I’d suggest a stainless steel barrel to keep any corrosion at bay.

Nothing wrong with a tx3 tikka for doing the job, barrel length is your choice totally it won’t matter much either way to be honest just buy what feels best for you. Good thing about a tikka is you can tart it up as much as you like with stocks, triggers, bolt handles, bottom metals, for not a lot of money and change it from being a pure factory rifle. Tikka’s tend to be inherently accurate with most ammunition also. .223 is a great calibre with a good bullet choice from 40-55 grn factory in most shops and up to 80’s if you home load, I use 53grn vmax in mine but going to develop the 69 grn tmk’s. Either of my bullets will be good out to 300 and more with the 69’s. If your taking long range foxes on then .22,250 does beat the .223 as distance in the small calibres.

100%

Only thing is if you’re looking to shoot heavier than about 55 grain bullets you’ll need a fast twist barrel, tikka do a 1 in 8 twist that should do the job.

A 22-250 will certainly outperform the .223 all day long. Better in the wind and more accurate further out too.

Mines a 1-8” obviously I did forget to mention that😂🙈

They are varied depending on which block of ground I’m on so I normally have a couple rifles with me. Max distance id be comfortable with is 300m as can usually get them in abit if there further out.

The longest fox I've taken was 315m and that was due to being unable to get him in closer and he was waiting to snaffle a newborn lamb. That was with a 23" 1:8 twist barrel slinging a 50gr Sierra Blitz King.

For the record earlier that day I had been working on my drop chart and had shot to 300m on a steel gong very happily and with consistent results. Most other times I'm looking between 125-175m

i did very good work with an 18'' 223 on foxes , get a twist to suit the 40gr vmax and you'll be golden , nice and flat at reasonable distance and foxes don't take a lot of killing in my experience
