.270 reloading

So I was wondering what an average load of powder would be through the .270? I worked up a load with nosler 130 grain accubonds and didn’t get brilliant results,(1”). They performed really well in the field though. Using N160.

I worked up a load with prohunters and they’ll shoot 0.5” 4 shot group quite comfortably at 100 yards with 57.5 grains of N160.

I’ve got a box opened of accubonds left and with the time available thought about going back and retrying loads in the 57-58 grain range. I think 58 was the max nosler suggested?

I haven’t done much fiddling with seating depth as I’m fairly novice to the whole thing but loading to the recommended COALin the nosler textbook gave good results with the prohunters.

The accubonds may just never shoot well but they made a good job of carcasses and knockdown so tempted to retry them. Any suggestions appreciated?

PS the prohunters seem to be quite harsh on the meat if you hit any bone. Would the gamekings be significantly harder/less destructive?

(ps using CCI large rifle BR2 primers and Norma brass)

Cheers!

I use the 130 Gamekings in mine. Like anything of that size, if they hit bone they'll do some damage, but I find them perfectly decent. Especially as I load down to about 2800fps :thumb:

Cheers guys. Without a chrono,(and obviously varies with barrel length) but how much powder are you looking at for these sort of speeds?

I use 54 grains of H4831 for that load. My rifle absolutely loves it. I gave a few to @john.g to try and he said he couldn't get them to shoot in his at all. Mind you, his groups look like the result of a bayonet charge at the best of times :-|:lol::lol:

Haha! Is H4381 one of the powders you cant buy any more?

Paul and I use a 150gn game king head with n165 and 215 magnum primers...

Cheers tim! Why the n165 rather than the 160? I’ve been told no need for magnum primers as it’s not a magnum caliber? Not knocking any of it, just a novice and always learning.

Probably because I use those primers and gave Tim my load data. They are specified for my 110gr copper bullet loads so I just used them with the 150gr bullets too. I've also tried standard large rifle primers and they work fine too.

Hmm.
My Nosler 6th manual gives a max of 55gr N160 with 130gr Accubond for 3,100fps out of a 24" barrel.
My Speer 13th* gives a max of 55.5gr N160 with their 130gr bullets for 2,930 out of a 22" barrel.
Viht themselves say a max of 58gr N160 for 130gr Remington SP for 3,082fps & a near identical 3,089fps with the same Speer bullet as in Speer's* own manual, though in this case from a 24½" barrel.

I'd suggest trying for a lower velocity node with the Accubonds - say between 53 & 56gr.

There's actually more information/loads given for N165, which suggests it's more optimal for 130gr bullets (which is why I just picked up 1kg to use in replacement of my beloved H4831SC).

As for GameKing vs ProHunter: The only real difference is the boat tail vs flat base, as jacket thickness is identical & the former intended for longer range.

Thank you! I must have taken it from the app as I have been using both. If I remember correctly, I got a brilliant load,(grouping wise) with accubonds at around 52 grains of powder but had very sooty cases so moved on from it.

How many nodes would you tend to find over a range of power?

Is there a ‘best’ powder for the .270? I notice some people talk about changing powder for different bullet weights?

appreciate the info on the gamekings. I thought the jacket may have been different. I’ll stick for now.

I notice a lot of older threads suggest either N160 or RL22? Is there much in it? I may be picking up a 6.5x55 in the near future so if one of those powder sticks both well then that would be handy

Just got through loading my newly arrived 140 Accubonds, 58 grains "C" H 4831SC ................ Now what else can I do on the bench?, brow furrowing ... OK, back to the treasure hunt in the workshop. :worried::rolleyes::worried::rolleyes:

Mostly two from my experience, with one having a wider tolerance than the other.
Sometimes they're accurate but too low pressure, such as your 52gr load.
As for powder: I'm in the same boat as many in that I used a now banned powder (H4831SC) & am working on new loads to replace it.
I've bought N140 & Reloader 19 to try with 90gr bullets, N165 & Reloader 22 to try with 130-150gr.
Reason for this is a lighter bullet almost invariably requires a faster burning powder for optimum performance, due to it acceleratiing faster & thus allowing less time for the charge to fully combust before it leaves the barrel.

Needless to say, actual testing is currently out of the question. :(
