.300 win mag or 6.5PRC

I
Well put! If budget was unlimited and there were no regulatory hurdles, I would say get them all! But there’s trade offs in every decision. I’d love a 300PRC here in the USA to try my hand at long range shooting at targets and big game out west. But I certainly don’t need one for my white tail hunting in the woods of Pennsylvania. But no one is trying to discourage the OP from scratching his itch. He just needs to be prepared for bigger recoil and ammunition costs that come with a caliber like that or the 300 Win Mag. There’s something to be said about being able to see your bullet trace and impact on target. I never had that until I got my first 6.5 CM. It’s a game changer.
i haven’t looked but I doubt there’s much difference between ammunition costs of the 6.5 PRC and the 300 WM. If reloading there’s the powder cost but that doesn’t seem to be reflected in factory costs.

👍 much heavier than most commonly used lead, (were talking.308, right) there must be some rational but I don’t understand it.
I use a piddly 126.5 grain copper, never failed me yet, all species except sika.
They must be very long bullets, do they stabilise in the normal 1:11-1:10 twist?
We’re talking 300 WM or maybe PRC lapua do a 170 gr and barnes have offings in the LRX range up to 212 grains.

A standard win mag will struggle to stabilise, the PRC is designed with a 1:8 twist so will cope well.

The point of these bullets in these cartridges is they have high BC and can still be pushed fast enough to expand, this ultimately gives you a longer range cartridge that will withstand wind drift better than say a 130 gr from a .308. It’s really up to the individual to decide if that’s what they need, or even if that’s just what they want.

I have both the 6.5PRC, & the 300wm. Both are VERY capable, and whilst I used the 300wm for "plains game", the PRC would have done just fine, but I'd have loaded a better bullet.

I reload, but this is purely comparative.

6,5PRC: Hornady ELD-X 143gn @ circa 3070fps / 2990ftlbs

300WM: Barnes LRX 175gn @ circa 3128fps / 3800ftlbs

The 184gr Copper Bear shoots very well in my 1/11 308w Tikka it has a big cavity to expand well in lower velocitys. Its tradition to use heavy bullets here and it was a law to use 155gr-2000j or 139gr -2700j/100m for biggame its now changed to 7,5g-2000j for non lead we will see if the light bullets works as good.

180 grain Barnes TSX homeloads in my 300 WM does everything without too much meat damage. Yes, there’s recoil. I cannot see any reaction to shot with it - hence I usually use my 6.5x55 for woodland stalking, but on the open hill the WinMag is excellent. Also shoots very well with 220 g Sako Hammerheads.
