Hey guys

Newbie to reloading and starting so looking to see what people are using

Going to be loading for a howa 1500

I fancy using a 150g bullet and been looking at the Sierra pro Hunter or game king

Was wondering what powder people found best etc

Thanks in advance

Yes, start with a vanilla, flat base Hornady Interlock, Speer, or Sierra Pro Hunter in 150 and 165.

These bullets can be loaded down for soft shooting, or full loads to really deliver at long range, and you can later switch over to a more sleek boattail for that, in SP, HP, polymer tip, or monometal like Barnes.

Over here, 4350 and H414/W760 are where to start with powders for the 165, but H4895 is great for the 150s, because it is so versatile for a range of power. Those are going away for you, so I guess you have to look at RS50 and N150. The UK gang will know more about all that.

Hi SOUTHERN. As you know H414 can't be any longer imported here. So I've laid in a stock of five 1lb canisters. I going to get around to reloading Sierra Game King 200 grain and European 150 grain and 180 grain FMJ. I've always liked that weight, 200 grains, after owning a 8x60S Mauser and using it with 196 grain bullets and factory ammunition. I'm aiming for a all UK legal 2,450 fps in a 24" barrel. I think I'll be OK. What think you? I'll be using CCI Magnum Primers.

H4895 is my favourite with 150gn flat base Sierra bullets, can't remember what charge off the top of my head at the moment but can easily be found and then you will have to experiment with your rifle to find the best
Incidentally I don't do as much reloading now as I used to, as I have found PPU does the job very well indeed and works out cheaper than reloading.

Good choice, a Sierra Game king is hard to beat as a general purpose bullet, I would go 165grn in the .30-'06 but thats just my choice.

Did you use H414 with the 200-gr in your 8x60S?
200-gr is the weight my 8x57s and both 8x60s liked, and a full load was most accurate. I use IMR-4350 and 4064.

But the 180-gr in the .30-06 is a more optimum bullet for hunting. It can be loaded to such a higher velocity than the 200 that it shows with less drop and more retained energy out to over 400 yards, and there are so many choices in 180-gr, from RN to sleek ones. I have some of the old multi-powder Federal High Energy factor ammo which are like .300 H&H with the 180-gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. I would not be afraid to shoot most any critter with these, so I am hoarding them.

You should easily get 2,450 FPS from a 24-inch .30-06 with H414 and 200-gr bullets, but this small spherical powder does best accuracy with a full case, which will get you closer to 2,550 FPS.

H414 is a great powder for the 165 and 168-gr bullets, pushing them over 2,900 FPS with standard pressures.

For your 200-gr, if you want a little higher velocity and accuracy, a slower powder like RL19, RL22 or N160 will give accurate loads at the 2,450 FPS you seek, and the upper loads will give you closer to 2,600+.

I use RS 60 for 150gr Hornady SST and 180gr Nosler Accubond in 24" barreled Sako 3p.06, very accurate but ,lively!

165 grain gamekings with VitN150 or swiss rs 60 is working well for me , or the 150 grain flat base both shoot really well in my 30-06

My long range load is a 180 gr. Sighted in 3” high at 100. My brush load is the Sierra 200 gr. SPBT with a max load of RL 19, the 200 grainier hits dead on at 100 without having to adjust my scope and is very accurate.

RL17 or RS60 works very well without needing a looong drop tube like you need with RL22 or MRP. It works very well with 150s, 165s and 180s.

That sounds like a good setup for covering a variety of ground...only about 4 inches low at 300 yards with the 180 gr.

Actually the 180 gr. is about 6" low at 300. I'm only getting 2650 fps from my 22" Rem 700. I might be able to work up past that, but why bother, it works.

2,650 fps is about right for a normal load with a 180-gr from a 22-inch barrel.
I still have my first "bought new" rifle, a Remington 700 ADL. I use 180 gr RN with its open sights...shoots better every year.

Do you WANT more steam?
I have some hotter loads for my 24-inch M700 BDL SS, Tikka T3, TC Icon, and B78, which are very accurate at MVs of 2,800 fps and a bit higher. I am thinking of working up one load for all of them with a powder I know I can get for a while, and the 178-gr ELD-X for hunting at longer range.

To tell the truth, some of the old flat base 165 and 180 gr bullets are so accurate ( sub 2.0 inch groups at 300 yards ), I sometimes wonder why bother experimenting? A 200-gr Nosler Partition at 2,650 will work on about anything from whitetail to grizzly bear, and a TBBC or A-Frame will shoot slap through really big game.
