Hi anybody tried 410 slugs , thinking of using them for humane dispatch following deer RTA ( if I can get them on my FAC )
Anyone tried loading them ? Seen some on the net anybody know any others suppliers?
Cheers Monty

For close range use such as humane dispatch they would be unnecessary. The pellets in a normal cartridge act like a solid slug anyway at such a short distance.
A solid slug would give a ricochet risk I should think, which you really don't want at the roadside if it can be avoided.

Thanks for your reply but I am fully aware of the ballistics of the shot patten and have been testing the useful range of a 410 using shot which is maximum 3 metres, I would like the option , just by changing cartridge to a slug a range of say 3 metres to maybe 30 metres subject to testing
This option would probably be better than a full bore rifle IMO

I think 3 metres is pushing it a bit for a .410 with shot on a deer. Best keep it for point-blank, really.

Anything at a distance, I'd use a rifle, rather than mess around with slugs.

Kind regards,

Carl

While I don't really have any experience with humane dispatch and road accidents but if you have a rifle already, then it'd be way less bother trying to explain what you are doing then if you were trying do it with .410 slugs. I reckon the police would smell a rat no? Even if you don't have a rifle. It's an excuse to buy another gun

Edit - Mine is more of a question than fact

From memory this was at 50m with Winchester 20g slugs, at 70m a touching group is consistently achievable so accuracy is not a problem at 30 with the 20g slugs, never tried the 410 but I can’t see a reason why they should not perform as well ?

I'm another who would ask "Why ?" If it's on the deck a 2" .410 cartridge from 2 or 3" away from the skull will be more than enough to paid to any suffering. If it's bouncing around in a field, use the rifle and know exactly where the shot is going. Respectable groups are possible with many slugs, but how many of us could do it with the average .410 at 30yds + ?

A .410" firing a slug will be pretty much the same effect as a six inch revolver firing a .41" S & Magnum. Indeed with a good quality strong .410" shot pistol it'd probably be a lot less aggravation to go down that route than asking for a conventional (restricted to two shots) pistol or revolver and FWIW a lot more versatile. But nowadays sourcing a decent single shot true .410" shot pistol of a similar quality to the Harrington & Richardson Handy Gun in that calibre I once had might be difficult.

Thanks gentleman for the replys , as triggermortis posted its would seem possible to be accurate with a 410 slug at short range
yes I have a 308 rifle so have that option
And have tested a 410 to 3 metres on a deer replacement target
But would like the option to extend the 410 range just with a cartridge change

Thanks Enfield for the reply I already have a 410 shotgun I was hoping to use that with a slug but my firearms enquiry officer is not very keen on granting me a slug on my ticket
Please explain FWIW .

FWIW = For what it's worth. So for what it's worth anything chambered in .410" as it could fire slug well enough out to from a few mere inches out to five or ten yards and yet fire conventional birdshot efficiently from a few mere inches out to twenty-five yards would be a better overall tool.

I cant see the police issuing 410 slugs for what you are suggesting. i know Norfolk would not, a normal cartridge does the job just fine. But good luck with your quest if you feel to pursue it.

Does anyone know where you can buy loaded 410 slug cartridges please. I could also load if I had to but as i have a hand press for 410.

Have you asked for slugs ?
I know someone in Norfolk with 12 g slugs on their ticket for training and evaluation

Just out of interest would there be any sense in getting a .45 long colt rifle and have the option of using a .410 shot cartridge in it?
