Afternoon. I am sure it’s been asked before but I can’t find it. So here I go AGAIN
what is the best hunting load for 6.5 Creedmoor?
I looked at 143 ELD-X and according to looks like the fastest it will fly with any RS powder is 2650ish. Is this the desired speed for 6.5CM or do I need to chase 2800ish?

Get some 100 grain tTSX from Barnes run them at around 3100-3200 fps and it will do any deer in the uk from Muntjac to big reds much further than 99% of stalkers can place the shot reliably. You can also use them at any location and put the carcass into any dealer.
Not guessing on that one tiny little bit ! the 120s also work well they are just harder to get expanding well enough after 300 yards , simple enough to get to 2900 fps
With any copper you need to send them as fast as yo safely can , there are no downsides to some extra speed using monolithic copper of this type so long as pressure is safe in your firearm and the accuracy is working ( which it should do with a good load ).

If you’re not worried about lead free bullets, you’ll find the nosler/sierra/hornady etc 120grn ballistic tip offerings very hard to beat in your creedmoor. The 130grn Sierra tipped gameking is also a great bullet, mv of 27-2800 fps should be achievable with a wide range of powders. I honestly wouldn’t get hung up on which bullet, but I would leave the eldx alone personally, it’s a great bullet but quite specialist, extreme low drag expanding, read the blurb and its designed to expand well at ranges over 400m, so it can be a bit soft if you shoot a heavy bone under 100m.
Personally I use hornady cx or Barnes ttsx in my 6.5. If I could still shoot lead I’d use the 120grn nosler bt or 120 grn nosler partition.

Not trying to be a wise a$$ here, but the best hunting load for 6.5 CM is the one that shoots well in your rifle and has enough velocity for reliable expansion. Period.

The 2800'ish figure that get's batted around for the 6.5CM is a velocity that many feel is a good trade off between barrel wear and time of flight/wind drift for LR shooting.

But for hunting, it goes back to what I posted above. What shoots best in your rifle, and reliably expands the bullet, is "the best" hunting load.

Never shot a CM but have a 6.5x55 for many years. Used 140gr Gamekings running at 2700fps from a 20” tikka.
It killed everything when I did my bit. From Roe to big stags. It is the same bullet as you are talking about effectively.

I think you might be over thinking this. The speeds you are getting are not bad. Go out and shoot a few animals and make your mind up then.

I got a CM for long rang steel shooting and red deer stalking. I shoot 135 a tip on the steel and 123 sst on the reds running at 2746 fps. All the deer I have shot have been retrieved and none have ran on very far if they ran anywhere. It has the advantage over the 243 in the longer and heavier bullets from 95grn-150grn so plenty to choose from..

I had a great load with 130gr Berger bullets that was doing 2845fps out of a 22 inch barrel. I am now shooting a 114gr yew Tree bullet at 3040fps. So far happy with the Yew Tree bullet. Opens enough on Roe and penetrates enough on reds.

I shoot factory 143gr at 2550 and home loads at 2740 (using RS60).

Both kill - sika, red and fallow. The slower load will produce a few more runners, but I have yet to lose one. The advantage is that it’s just about perfect for roe. So I switch between them depending on what I’m most likely to meet.

I was reading with a 6.5 they prefer longer barrels due to velocity although for small deer I wondered if a bit less velocity might mean less damage whilst still being effective.

It doesn’t take much to kill a roe deer - as @Edinburgh Rifles once said you can do it with a well placed frozen pea.
