6.5PRC - first run at reloading. Request experienced reloader input

No no you cynical buggers we were shooting gongs. Testing a theory about wind performance downrange after some hints from our first deer & goat hunt with this round.

We don’t want to shoot the 130gr long-term, it was just an opportunistic try-out as it was all we had at the time.

When we drop tested this round, conditions were pretty much perfect… dead still. Bottom line is that the ballistics were rocksolid for the first 250yd. Dead flat and straight. Like a bloody laser, true point and press at this range. The MPBR (6”) for this load is about 330yd.

Today, the problem was the projectiles were slowing down rapidly and really getting screwed around in the wind - we were struggling to hit the 250mm gong at 400yd with splashes going left and right in a 02H00 variable gusty wind. Talk about fickle, bloody things were all over the place! Yes it was windy, and you needed to watch the trees for gusts yet to hit the shooting position, but on a range that we have shot since forever it was nothing unusual and no windier then I would shoot deer with my 6.5 or .308.

We had a look at the numbers, the projectile is losing velocity downrange that fast, that the wind effects are - in practical terms - way more pronounced and variable on the lighter bullet from >300yd than anything we are used to.

None of this should come as a surprise of course. But having been used to high BC bullets for so long now this was a real eye-opener.

But we were saved red faces as the 200gr ELD-X turned up this week, and load development was completed with no fuss. Same wind, bang on at 400yd (centre of the gong) and easy shooting at 700yd. No contest, just brilliant.

So it was an interesting experience trying light and fast copper, but in terms of bankable application for our conditions, it was a fail. Meat bruising at close range is  and gusty wind performance downrange iso_O. Was fun though.

We too found the close range meat damage with the 130g TTSX at 3600fps to be a bit OTT. I think the 150g TTSX is a better match for the 300 WSM and certainly it toned down the meat damage. I would hate to think what a lead core 130g bullet at 3600 would do to the edible meat. How many deer/goats did you shoot with it and what was the maximum range?

Just started development today in a Sako S20.Initial load of 50 grain of N160 pushing a Peregrine 118 bullet produced dirty cases velocity 2900 fps and 1" groups
Pushed it further and 54 grains are now producing ragged one holers at very consistent 3100 fps

I have to say, I absolutely adore my Bergera B14 Wilderness in 6.5PRC. Currently pushing 143gr ELD-X with RL26 55.5gr, Atlas cases.
Very accurate. I wanted a lead free load, but was disappointed with the peregrines and Lehigh Defence groups I achieved in testing.
For the foreseeable I have stocked up on the 143's and RL26.
I will try again with the lead free at some point, but the drought on components does not seem to be improving.

Killed much with it yet?

My friend has the same rifle. The only downside to it is that it's a short action and the COAL is very restricted by the magazine. He eventually took it to Rich Sharman of Yew Tree bullets who sorted out a load using the 114gr TLR bullet. Excellent accuracy and terminal performance. But it only just fits in the magazine with no room for extending the COAL as the throat wears - which it already has.

Just finalized my hunting load for my 6.5 prc S20, New nosler brass, win 215 primers, 57.1 gr N565 with Barnes 127 LRX at 2.895 COAL. 2960 fps, ES of 25, SD 9, over 20 shots avg .7 MOA at 100 meters. Not as fast as I would like but it will do since it is so accurate

Update with 127 lrx. Shot my mule deer (200 lbs or so)buck today at 135 yds, bang flop, very impressive! Slight quartering away high shoulder, small entry thru upper lung took out lower spine exited off side front shoulder loonie size exit. Very little meat damage, eat right up to the hole by the looks of it.

Thanks for the above…. I have my first 6.5prc
I’ve built a ladder usubg N160 and 120gr TTSX they are revelation sub 25mm groups at 150m… settled on 49.9
I tried a three of rounds at 300m yesterday and still getting 30mm group! A revaluation - the copper killing fallow dropping where they stood so far!
