6.5x55 Swedish

Both of mine are 20"
bet they have an impressive muzzle blast. on my wishlist is a 29" barrel m96 with gunsmith installed scope bases. They pop up every now and then but our licensing system sucks (imo) We buy individual paper purchase permits that currently cost 160 a piece and can take up to a year to actually get processed. Few sellers will hold a rifle that long so you would need the foresight to have just the right permit on hand when something pops up

They are ok with a sound mod. An ASE sl5 in 25 cal it works a treat
i use an osuma 170 6.5mm. It helps alot but still gives a decent blast. nothing like my 308 tho... take a kalashnikov in 308, then find out it loves slow powder. You feel that blast in your face

6.5x55 was designed alongside a 29" barrel tho. For our regular hunting these shorter barrels will work fine but really no better than the creedmoor wich is designed with modern shorter rifles in mind. You must see cartridges in their context and that includes the rifles.

30-06, 7.62x54r, 8x57ir, 6.5x55 especially all show their true colours in their original barrels

24"-26" gives the greatest performance for 30-06, just so happens the guns built for it had barrels like that.

7.62x54r, 27-29 inch for max efficiency and power. Just so happens the m91 variants around that time had barrels like that

6.5x55, yea you guessed it 29 inches for the swedes and 30 inches for norway.

Then militaries figured that soldiers rarely ever ended up utilising half the range of those rifles and "modern" warfare favoured mobility.

So everybody chopped down their rifles and the cartridges worked just fine in them. But its inefficient use of the case volume compared to the short action cartridges we have now.

I shoot a .270 but I've got a slot on FAC for a 6.5x55 and going to go shopping at some point.

Can I ask what make and model of powder measure it is please? I am going to start reloading soon and will do it by hand initially but might like to consider an automated measure for the future.
I get good results using RS 60

its my primary rifle, CZ550. Just took it out today, perfected by load and stacked 5 on top of one another at 100m, you could call it a 10mm group.

6.5x55 is quite easy to load and very worry free in my experience, kills everything up to moose, doubles as a decent varminter when loaded hot. Jack of all traits really with a good BC across the bullet range wich i apreciate for the rare occasiona i actually push a shot out.

Current load

123gr fox classic hunter, minimum legal for moose, fast enough to nail a roe deer out to 300m without adjusting POA if aiming high shoulder.

46.2gr of n550

fireformed and necksized Lapua brass

OAL 71.15 plastic tips removed (the batch i bought had a few fall out on their own)

I won't hate on 6.5 creed etc, no reason why it would be worse. But the 6.5x55 to me has the edge, more case capacity in a strong 98 type action.... just fireform your brass before you go there and necksize from there or brass wont last long.
Thank very much for sharing this information, really appreciated

I have a 6.5 Swede (Sauer) and love it. Have recently switched over to Sako Blade 120g and have been more than satisfied with the results, only issue is supply- apparently GMK are waiting on a shipment from Finland so nothing available in my area at the moment.

Always difficulties with supply, lam lucky to use my bullet heads , Sako is a good bullet

My favourite chambering - only just ahead of my .308.
130 gns Sierra Gamechangers over a modest charge of N160 are super accurate and will drop anything this side of the Pond…

My Sako 85 Finnlight in 6.5 x 55 is my principal stalking rifle; a Tikka T3 Supervarmint in .233 Rem is a distant second option. (I only shoot handbag deer.) A Schmidt u. Bender 3-12 x 50 Klassik tops it, and l carry it on a Z-Aim sling. lt’s my dream combo, and it leaves my safe on my death.

The Sako loves Norma factory ammunition loaded with 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. Groups around 0.6 MOA off the bench are typical.

The Noslers do major internal damage, which is the other reason l chose this load: l have no access to a tracking dog, so l want what l hit to be DRT (Dead Right There.) My spreadsheet is on the laptop in another room, but from memory my “dropped in its own hoofprints / within 10 yards” rate is about 95%.

If l went after the Big Three deer l’d probably go up to a 140gr. bullet, but l’d be very happy with the calibre.

Copper? lt’s a solution looking for a problem. When the politicians (*spit*) force me to, l’ll switch.

What is the load on 130 gr and COL , please
Your best results

My Swede has been my only deer calibre for the past 12 years. No factory ammo, just reloads. Managed to produce a load that was very accurate at 1000 yards (22 inch sporter barrel). Just finished working up my first copper load but not looking forward to using it on an actual deer due to the 'unknown' element.
