7mm-08 rifle suggestions and availability

its a cracking cartridge , i had a 595 tikka new in it before the t3 was launched . PITA to get a range of ammo , things are different now . However The 308 is cheaper on ammo and available from rifles to component ammo and factory and its all cheaper than 7-08 . I shoot 260 now as my main deer rifle now and the other more popular 6.5 creed pretty much does the same as my 260 . Big tip is dont bother buying 7-08 cases unless you have a 260 and struggle to get 260 brass now , i just neck the 243 up because again its very available and cheaper . 7-08 might be a better choice for me to neck down the half a mm but like i say cost and availability

Chris Hunt at Spartan refinishing has a Howa 1500 in 7-08 on his website it’s new and he’s carekoted the whole thing which looks real smart.

It could be because I never owned a rifle with 20" barrel and then velocity loss. Don't know how all others come up with about 30fps loss per inch of a barrel length for given chambering but my experience is going from 24" to 22" 150fps for swede and 150-200 FPS for 22-250. What I've read is 7mm-08 isn't affected by barrel length,so I could be wrong thinking that 20" barrel will neutered it
Don’t be stressed about neutering it with a 20” barrel we routinely cut them down to 15-16” here without any issues.

Well this idea constantly gravitating around my brain for couple of ears now. Finally decided to get one but then :banghead: what I want is not available in UK at least without waiting ages for special order. Was clear decision it has to be tikka or bergara but now looking for any options. It has to be 22" barrel and muzzle diameter 17mm. Any recommendations
I went to buy a 7mm-08 in '99 when I was working in Louisville, KY. After a lot of investigation, I bought a 260 Rem instead. I have never looked back and have been a firm fan of 260 Rem ever since. Looking at the UK today, I guess that you will find 7mm-08's for sale, but my concern would be finding ammunition to feed it. I suspect sourcing match ammo, lead and non-lead ammo will be an eye watering experience. The last 308 Win non-lead ammo that I bought cost me £66 a box. Reloading will be relatively easy as long as you can lay your hand on primers. I have a friend who was struggling for 7mm-08 brass, so I just ran a 7mm mandrel through some 260 Rem cases for him. I'm sure you will encounter situations where reloaded ammunition is not an option too.

If you are happy with all the ammunition constraints and the very limited resale value of a 7mm-08 rifle, then crack on. If you want something off beat, then a 7mm Creedmoor would also be an option.

Have fun.

As soon as the 6.5 Creedmoor came out, folks were off trying out necked down and necked up wildcats. People love to experiment with new cartridge cases, even if they are very similar to old cartridge cases.
Similarly for PRS this option is now being pursued - 25 Creedmoor Data

Privi make 7mm08 and it’s available in the UK!

A Browning Xbolt would be my first choice.
My B in Law has one in NZ and it's a sweet rifle to shoot.
Smoother than my Mossberg 7/08.

Ive a Howa 7/08. Had It stripped and rebuilt by Extreme Ballistics , Linus Ridge, no new bits just put together correctly and this is 1/4 min gun. Ive put a grs stock on it at the time too. carnt fault it!

What does stripping and rebuilding entail and how much is this service?

7-08 is a great round. I have had one for 20 years now. It doesn’t get much use due to increasing number of rifles in my safe but I won’t be selling it. It’s got a replaced barrel but the action is a bog standard browning A-Bolt.

There is at least one sako 7-08 on here I would be considering.

7x57, 7mm-08, 7x65r, 7x64 all pretty much do the same thing and all are sweet shooting cartridges. Ammo for all is available, but you will need to buy several boxes at once if want any continuity of supply - pretty much order in and buy 200 at a time.

In the UK they are really a reloading calibre if you want anything other than a few types of expensive factory.

If you want cheap and available ammo go 308 or Creedmoor.

The howa new and rebuild were £1300 but I had the grs. Action was trued to barrel ,rail realined, that was out 60thou. rebeded , trigger reworked , bolt checked . All in all it was comprehensive proved yet again how good the cheaper barrels are.
