7mm PRC

The cartridge of choice for the gentleman of taste who chooses not to follow the herd …..👍🏻
I do like to be away from the pack a little😂 saying that I was in a quandary whether to re barrel my .243 or go 6xc? On deciding to keep it as is because of the dies and setting up another calibre situation I got a fast twist 1-7” put on it and throated out for 108grn eldm’s and I must say it’s transformed the rifle. Gets the 1000 yard no bother and probably faster than a xc would be too, I am well chuffed

Thanks for your thoughts chaps. Being a fan of 7mm bullets and believing this to be a real ballistic sweet spot I was simply pondering if this would be the next iteration of the PRC platform and would be a genuinely useful addition to the already congested choice on offer.

I’ve been considering a .280 REM Ackley Improved and a 7wsm. I already have a 7-08 which is great although the rifle I have built in this chambering is rather a lump. I think a mild magnum 7mm (such as a 7mm PRC) built with a carbon wrapped barrel and a PSE stock or similar would be a damned useful tool. I seem to be just about coping somehow with the rifles I already have but you know how it goes, I can’t help feeling the need for one more!

It is rumoured that a 7PRC will be launched this autumn in the US by Hornady. I believe similar to a 7LRM so not a short action cartridge.

There are some decent copper bullets coming on to the market which fit the profile, and while l'm at it, l haven't heard that lead has been completely banned as of today's date.....
Who said anything about a lead ban!!

It does seem daft to take a cartridge specifically designed for a short action and then run it in a long action to make the most of powder space. May as well just get a .280 or .280AI and have more powder space in the first place

What I'm curious about is would it fit in a Tikka T3? The COAL would fit as Tikka chamber the T3 in 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag and they have the same COAL, but would it load nicely from the magazine? It's a bit shorter to the shoulder than a 7mmRM too.

Clearly Hornady do read posts on here. Perhaps they owe me a fee for this great idea!

Going to wait and see which manufacturer’s will be chambering in it then might have be variation time.

I believe Michael Rainback is making 7mm PRC barrels for the Blaser R8. You can specify length, profile, twist rate etc. I would have had one if I didn’t already have a 6.5PRC and a 300 Norma Mag. I have one of his barrels in 6CR and it’s a laser.

Do you have contact details for him?

Cheers

Just a thought, wouldn’t 7mm PRC be a good idea?

I’m a big fan of 7mm hunting rifles and bullets and the idea of a mild 7mm magnum with a modern, efficient non-belted case seems to make a lot of sense.

I doubt Hornady read threads on here but post this all the same on the off chance and to see what you lot think.

Sounds good, better twist rate more able to shoot moser high BC bullets. The 7 remm May was already better than .270 and 30-06 on that front anyway. Will be years before we get to have any European rifles chambered in it?

Hasn’t it been around for a while in NZ as the almost identical offspring of Nathan Forsters 7mm practical?

I think the 7PRC is rolling off a couple of manufacturing lines in the US, but for a few years will likely remain for custom chambering of new barrels in europe.
