I bought a box of 85gr Sierra HPBT to try as a dual purpose roe and fox bullet.
Does anyone else load these with N160? (I have Varget here too)

Just interested to see what loads people are using.
Before anyone points me to it, I have load data from Viht, Hornady and Nosler here which I will work from. I am just asking out of curiosity!

One of the best combinations I've ever used, Sierra 1530 hpbt over N160, its the only bullet in 243 that I have never seen anything walk/run away from!

43.5 of IMR4350 works a treat in mine. Roe and fox have all fallen to the shot. I generally take my 308 when after fallow but I wouldn't hesitate to take a fallow with the 243 and 85 grain Sierras.

Hi otisthedog, I've been using this bullet for the last 2 years,it does everything it should.I'm loading it without 43gr of n160 and using it for roe and muntjac but wouldn't hesitate using it on fallow. The gent who put me onto these used them a lot on fallow and anchored some big fallow with them.

I use this head with N160, I found that 43.8 gave the best group for me, under 1/2" at 100 yards and averaging 3050fps out of a 22" barrel. I have moved from 90gr Noslers to this head as half the price and just as accurate.

I only use 42grn of N160 in my 243, but I use a 95grn Hornady SST bullet, very accurate and nothing walks away from that. I've used them on just about every thing I shoot. All Vit powders are very good. I can use N160 in my 243, 270 and 30-06. I use N140, which is the same as Varget, for long range shooting with the 308 and I have used N133 in my 223 and 45-70.

I used the 85 grn Sierra for a while and didn't like the results. The bullet was too frangible for my liking, and although I never lost a deer, it made a mess of all of them. Multible exit wounds were the norm, and more than once the fragmentation of the bullet (or bone splinters) resulted in a burst rumen.
I now use 95grn Nosler Ballistic Tips at about 3100fps. The bullet works very well, and I've shot a lot of roe and muntjac with it.
The link is to an earlier post about the Sierras.
