Advice on Bottom Metal for Rem 700 S/A

Hi all,

Have just been refitting my GRS Beserk stock onto my Rem 700 S/A and the polymer bottom plate has split around the rear stock bolt hole. I was torquing it up to 4Nm and heard it ping!

The polymer bottom plate doesnt have any manufacturer markings on it and the only thing of note is the mag release lever is at the front. The mag which came with it has "Distrubuted by Legacy Sports" underneath it...

I'd prefer to replace the polymer plate with metal if possible? Can anyone point me in the right direction to a UK stockist? Ideally I'd like a straight swap and to continue using my current 10rnd polymer mag if possible?

Thanks in advance...

Tom

Sorry to say but you have the shitty Legacy Sports detachable magazine conversion.

Only way to get those mags to work is buy another floorplate (they are a rip off anyway).

If you want to convert it to an internal mag (BDL) I could help.

AICS conversions are expensive but will work.

Either replace with the same one (not reccomended): SHORT ACTION CONVERSION PLATE

Buy a Magpul version (might not work with other mags) : Magpul Hunter 700 Standard Detachable Magazine Well - AICS short action

Or Lucky 13 version: Lucky 13 Remington 700 detachable magazine conversion kit .308 .243

Or go full AICS (may need proper inletting and pillar height adjustment to work)
Thanks for the quick reply....

Ahhh so they're well known to be crap then? Certainly won't replace with the same, will the Lucky 13 be a straight swap? Keen to get it back up and running ASAP so could do without needing any smithing work doing to it....

I bought the rifle on guntrader, from gunsmith in August, he had fitted a new sassen varmint barrel onto a 2nd hand Rem action got them cerakoted, fluted the bolt and fitted a timney trigger & the grs stock... All good until now....

Many thanks

Hi Tom,

I'd be asking said gunsmith to sort it before you try installing something yourself.

I suspect they will have parts lying around for an internal/floorplate magazine, might be worth asking about that.

The Lucky 13 claims to be a direct fit. Kwik Clip is another alternative.

Personally don't like large magazines as the extrusion means you won't be able to use the rifle in some positions.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the advice...

I've sent the guy an email and will see what he says... The lucky 13 looks like a good option for me so will see when the seller reopens what their thoughts are...

many thanks

I had a very similar problem. Replaced the original Remington bottom metal with the equivalent part from https://www.sunnyhillgunparts.com/700rem.html

Thanks JCS... Went through all the options last night - The supplier of the rifle has offered a Tier One bottom metal option but unable to sort until after new year, mentioning approx £120 + a mag..... I've even thought about using this as an excuse to sell on the Beserk stock & buy an AICS AT, using the stock money & what I'd spend on bottom metal & mag to offset against it... :-|

I have a feeling that you can’t fit a Tier One conversion to a GRS stock. I looked into it recently and ended up with a KRG instead.

Have a word with the guys at Riflemags, their Lucky Thirteen sounds like a solution.

Badger ordnance do/did a mag conversion for this…think it was this that was fitted in a carbon stock that used to belong to JCS.
I might have one spare

Ask if this price includes installing pillars into the stock to ensure correct fit and function (feeding rounds from the magazine).

Tier One advertises their AICS conversions as coming with pillars:

Too many 'gunsmiths' around who charge for opening boxes and using allen wrenches.

I’ve looked at the KRG Bravo before now, very nice…. Haven’t really looked at MDT, any recommendations?

Its worth looking at the mdt oryx and xrs chassis.
These are one piece chassis and are the least expensive.
I have 3 krg bravo chassis. They are lighter than the mdt ones and thats one of the reasons I choose them over the others.

You could simply replace with Remington metal (as in BDL bottom metal)

If you need to have detach mag then Atlas works or Tier One would be easiest to obtain in the UK but may require some ajustment of the stock inlet

A simple job to get wrong with a dremel or mill if you don’t know what your doing as the inlet may need altering to achieve the correct relationship with the bolt / magazine to allow reliable pickup and feed from the mag

With stocks such as the GRS Beserk there is only polymer construction so fitting pillars is difficult unless you can find an adhesive that will work

The GRS stock have a deep inlet at the rear action (base ) inlet and not much clearance for such work so go careful if you do it yourself

The Sunny Hill bottom metal (BDL ) is superb but expensive

Badger do indeed to a straight M5 detach bottom metal Whixh isn’t a drop in and needs some minor fitting (again expensive to buy ans good luck with finding one in the uk )

I may have a short action standard rem bottom metal here if you are stuck

I have a Badger M5 here too, but that’s part of an ongoing build of a rifle I made several years ago that’s being re worked for a client

I’m not sure about the other brands mentioned as I don’t use them

Possibly easy to criticise people who do this for a living and charge for a service - but having had to rectify many “home workshop” jobs that didn’t end up how the originator believed it would it may be best to get things done properly first to avoid leg work and unnecessary rectification expense ,,,,

Go somewhere with them in stock and try them out, distributor (Highland Outdoor I think) usually has a stand at shows.

Don't buy one willy nilly on the internet, as most that show up on the classifieds are bought in such a manner...

That’s basically what the gunsmith I asked told me. Good though he is, he basically said it can’t be done. Shame, cos the Bifrost stock looks great on paper, and really pretty in the pictures. I tried one on the Remmy before making a decision and discovered there are better stocks out there. It’s now on a KRG Whisky 3 chassis, but I know of a couple of folk with the Bravo and X-Ray versions who are pretty pleased with them.

I had the same set up as you, rem 700, grs berserk and same mag conversion but without any issues apart from not getting on with the grs stock. Swapped for MDT oryx....chuff me I love it ands only need aics mags at £40 ish 2nd hand. I like how open it is around the barrel for when it gets wet so doesn't hold the moisture as much
