Advice Please on how to keep fallow off maize

Don't let any Summer growth vegetation touch the electric fence to short it out. In drought conditions, the ground may be too dry for the deer to get a shock.

Pouring a bucket of water into the ground around the earth peg from time to time, just to keep it moist, will help a lot during drought conditions.

How likely is this to be granted? When i did My DSC1 3/4 years ago the course provider told us only 2 night licences had been granted by NE up to that point

The people who shoot deer on the MoD ranges at Lulworth have appeared to have them in the past, or perhaps they don't need them.

And what about where the animals are standing?

Well in theory you'd water the whole fenceline, but that's just not practical. However, watering the earth peg is easy to do, and does make a big difference, especially if using a small portable battery unit with a fairly shallow earth.

It didn't make much difference in 1976(on clay).

As well watering the stake you can run out a separate earth wire at the bottom of the lives on the fence and then connect this to the soil at intervals this will help a lot with the animals completing the circuit.

+1, just like the turned out netting around the bottom or a pheasant pen.

Put up 4 electric fence wires, less will not stop them. Do not make them all live as when ground dries out they will not receive a shock. Make the bottom wire 12" off ground and live. Second wire up make it earth and 24" from ground, Third wire Live and 36" off ground. Top wire earth and 48" above ground. With this arrangement if deer push between wires they have live and earth either side of body. If they push under the bottom wire chances are they will get shock. If they go over the top wire they will not be in contact with the ground so earthed top wire make no difference.
Forget the out of season licence if too many people try that NE or Defra will reduce the chances of it for those in genuine need.
