Hi Everybody, would anyone out there be interested in 3d Aerial mapping of their stalking grounds, farms, shoots, estates etc?? Provided from an Aerial Drone which can be preprogrammed with a set flight path and take high res images on the ground which is then run through software to produce a 3d image which contours, valleys gullies etc can be seen and measured or a standard 2d map showing contours can be drawn. The camera also has enough resolution to count animals on the ground if counts are needed. This is just an inquiry stage to see if anyone would like this service, thanks

Hi Deako, thanks for your reply this is not for a course its a service that I would provide for landowners, farmers, forestry etc so they could get a better image of their terrain and or animal numbers. regards Steve

Steve, apart from coverage, what advantage does this offer compared to commerically available LiDAR data? And how does cost compare to LiDAR?

Regards,

Dave

I'll rephrase it Steve...

"I think there would be a lot of interest in this. Of course, it would depend on the price." :D

What are the legalities of using a drone?

From what I have seen on the internet they are classed as un-manned light aircraft, mostly, so require quite a few permissions...inc. Air Traffic Control clearance, etc.

Hi Saddler thanks for your questions if I was offering this service it would be operating on the right side of the Law that I can assure you, however you are legally allowed to fly a drone under 20kg in the uk and mine weights less than half that and is made of foam and plastic it is classed as unmanned however I have total control when it is flying, if you are taking commercial pictures you require CAA permission and you must not fly in airport boundaries which I have no interest in or within 150 metres of a congested area. I must stress we are not talking military grade drones such as those seen on the TV we are talking some commercial drones carrying little more than a battery, camera, propeller and processor smaller than remote controlled planes and helicopters regards Steve

Hi Dave LiDAR maps are fine if you can get them but they are generate using a laser at altitude where my drone generates using a camera much closer to the ground and I find much more detail can be obtained from pictures than software generated maps. Cost wise obviously cheaper as the system isn't mounted to a plane with a pilot and operator, its basically a camera mounted to a foam plane with a small processor

Why are you skirting round the cost? I'm sure a few of us would be interested but you need to give us a guide price? Or are we playing charades ?

watching too much dragons den me thinks

Possibly, but you can only ask the same question so many times :-|

It sounds an interesting concept.. Have you got any examples of your product, then we could let you know if we think its a viable product and how much we would be willing to pay?

I spent 4 years working for a company doing both mapping for OS etc and also Lidar mapping for the EA. It was like aerial farming!

I don't see the point in a deer stalking environment, we can use google earth, get off our backsides and find the deer ourselves to give an indication of deer populations.

However, for a film maker this would be a great aid doing some aerial shots without the use of a helicopter, there are several hunting examples on youtube, i'm not talking about the shakey videos we often see but putting together something a bit special.
I assume you just attach a Go Pro or something similar.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Guys merely in the inquiry stage at the moment guys once my site is up and running I can give you an exact pound figure per hectare I understand that you all want the price ASAP as this is a new start up company which Im doing for aerial land photography and 3d mapping I just thought Id ask some of my fellow deer stalkers out there if they would be interested in such a venture thinking that the hunting/deer management industry might be an interested in a new outlook on there lands. Yes google maps etc can provide you with aerial views no problem off course however if a more detailed picture of what you have maybe to provide to stalkers who would be looking to lease your lands for a couple of days etc then this might be a handy idea. I'm starting to wish Id never asked Ive had some very hostile PM messages has no body ever started a new small business before!

Sounds good.

Our tech man down south is also trying this type of stuff out and I will obviously use him, so I'm out :)

Seriously, ignore the c**p, there is scope for this type of work, maybe look at broadening your survey types. It's the future, so keep an open mind and good luck.

This is very interesting stuff. Just out of curiosity what sort of range does your drone have? I.e. How long can it spend in the air at a time? How long would it take you to map an area say in minutes per acre?
