Ammo for DSC 1

I'm looking at getting my DSC Level 1 and want to know if on the shooting phase of the course, is it essential to use expanding ammo or is it ok to use 155gr SMK's (.308) as my rifle finds them far more accurate ?

Regards

Just checked the forms from my own DSC1 course (with BASC) a couple of years ago and the requirements were (1) rifle in deer legal calibre and (2) factory ammunition, no home loads.

So in theory you should be fine to take your [factory] target rounds for your .308 (deer legal) rifle , but the test is pass/fail and isn't massively demanding so I wouldn't be too concerned about the extra 0.001 MOA.

Ask the course provider, some insist on factory ammo while others allow any reloads as long as its a deer legal calibre

Akeld - spot on!

For the Shooting Test you are required to use a deer legal rifle and ammunition. However, some courses operate on ranges where range specific rules preclude certain elements of that or club/insurance rules apply - hence people have slightly different experiences.

Golden rule remains - always consult your course provider - they are your best source of information.

Not everyone who does a level 1 is yet conditioned for Expanding Ammunition so Logic would suggest 'Target Ammo' is acceptable.Indeed many a FLD are asking for level 1 before considering it. It is a test of Shooting ability so the projectile used is surely immaterial? The Form you sign on the Range only asks for Calibre and Bullet weight if memory serves.

Yorkie.

How strict are BASC on the homeloading front? Do they check your ammo.

I use Winchester cases and actually have some Winchester boxes etc. So they look like factory ammo. I want to avoid paying stupid money on factory ammo when I have perfectly good homeloads.

Well Tim, as BASC are on this site, you have just blown it...

£40 max for a box of 20 is nothing compared to getting kicked off the course for trying to smuggle homeloads in when told not to.

Your call, but it would be the wrong one

Well hopefully they'll take note from a member and rethink the stupid rule. The course is expensive enough, without forcing people to pay £66 to join BASC so they can attend and then have to use factory ammo!!

Deer course, with a deer legal calibre and deer legal home loads. I don't understand the problem.

I did mine with Baroney, along with Liddlesdale..( Hi Mate) took some ammo,in my normal .243.... but took 90gr feds and not the 100gr privi I'd been using up till that point....my first shots were all over the place..( hit the target but not the rings) ......BAD grouping...so, Paul lent me his gun, and his ammo, great job......passed second try...:)

My advice...use the trainers/estate gun on yer asessment.......its not really a lot of cash when all said and done...:)

Why did you need to join BASC to do your DSC1? There are other insurers out there that can provide the cover cheaper, and then go to another DSC1 provider - there are 1/2 dozen on here...

As said further down the thread though, use the estate rifle as it will cost you nothing. Is one box of factory really going to break the bank??? How much did your complete set up cost? Rifle, optics etc... A bit than the difference between 20 homeloads and one box of factory ammo. If it really IS an issue, why not barter some factory of a mate for some homeloads?

BASC membership for DSC1 is compulsory as per their DSC1 application form, follow the link below.

I did look at other training providers, however been as this one is being run less than 10miles from my house, the cost of BASC membership is less or equal to the travelling I would need to do for another course. So will use them for this years insurance and go back to 3C card next year.
