An (almost) birthday buck

Thursday July 30
I went up a mountain, not far from my place, together with another hunter who maintained that a good buck (he showed me a picture) has survived the last hunting season and, probably the winter as well.
We reached a high seat, facing a meadow and surrounded by the forest.
After few minutes we saw two roes coming out of the forest: roe and a chasing buck! I succeeded in noting that the buck antlers were much taller than the ears, then they disappeared to our right, in spite of my friend shout.

Friday July 31
We went again to same place, seeing among the first trees a yearling doe, an older doe and a buck.
The range was too long for shooting, but not enough to prevent us from noting that the buck was a good one, the same as the previous day. The antler shape corresponded to the last year picture.
The buck decided to take a nap under the first trees while the does continued to graze.
After the best part of an hour the buck stood and started grazing while coming down the slope, toward the stump (red arrow in the picture). I couldn’t shoot, due to the tall grass rather high and, moreover, as the buck was facing me straight on.
Another few steps and the buck disappeared. Tunnels and subway on the mountains are unknown to us, so we gathered that the buck had turned to his right (our left) and had gone down a hollow.
No more roes in sight for that afternoon, while a yearling red stag came to browse 35 m from us.

Sunday August 2
It rained all Saturday and Sunday morning, but the afternoon was fine, so went up again.
After few minutes a doe, probably the eldest of the previous days, appeared under the first trees and came down, toward the “250 m” stump, where she got down to chew the cud.
After half an hour the doe rose and moved down, in the high grass, reaching the low firs ((green arrow).
The buck came from the left and as soon as the thorax was free from branches I shot.

I consider this buck as a birthday present, because on August 22 I will reach “hill 83”.
