Atv & quad helmets

Lucky man, could have been so different. Sometimes it takes an accident or near miss for some to take the precautions and use the PPE and for others it's to late unfortunately.

Friend of mine used to ride his quad without a helmet, was only a small quad 350 not like the new stuff, Any way on some steep ground it looped back on him.
He managed to lie back on the quad and struggled back to the farm house for help.

Fractured skull/Damaged spine/Damaged arm/lungs and ribs he was lucky to survive ! Always had a full face MotoX helmet on after he was better

Thanks Neil,
I have been wearing a Petzl climbing helmet I use for tree climbing, I can't see why I can't use the Petzl, just wondering, as we have an ATV course next month and want the right hat for the day. I do use the Petzl and will continue to use a helmet, the ground we're on is very uneven and what cost do you put on your head accidents do happen.

David

The Petzl is not a bad hat, (chainsaw climbers version) I had one and did wear it on the quad, but only on the days
I had the saws out as well, but our ground was pretty flat, little to no risk of turning it over, even on the three trailer days.

Neil.

That is very true, the Petzl Roc (climbing helmet) is a very good piece of PPE, for climbing. Anything else is a compromise.
I've worn one for many years, ever since qualifying as an instructor, before qualifying I never wore a helmet for any kind of climbing. During our course we were shown a video (yes, it was that long ago) promoting Petzl helmets, showing the design development, manufacturing and testing. Even they admitted to shortcomings of climbing helmet design and balancing safety against consumer requirements.
The upshot, to me , was that the helmet was designed to give a level of protection agaist rockfall from above. Very little or no protection was provided against impact from the sides, front or back, mainly due to the suspension system which was adjusted by the wearer. If adjusted properly some protection was afforded, if improperly adjusted too much movement reduced the level of protection. The testing procedures also highlighted that crushing or impact loads from anywhere other than above allowed sufficient movement that complete protection cannot be provided.

From my youthful experience on motorcycles (when helmets were optional:) ) I would not want to rely on a climbing helmet if I were involved in a crash having seen that film.

I have one of these:

Not cheap but it fits me!! (size XL) Urban Rider were very helpful.
Apart from fit and comfort, my main consideration was provision of integrated visors.
I wear spectacles and keeping the muck off them while riding the quad is a major consideration, so there has to be room under the visor(s) for the spectacles; a separate integrated sun visor as on this helmet is also really useful.

I regularly have to travel on public highways between home and stalking ground - no great distance (and too short to put quad on a trailer), so I have fully comprehensive insurance and a road legal quad.
I fear that not using a "motor-bike" rated helmet could be regarded as "contributory negligence" in the event of an accident on the road.

Also keeps head and face warmer in the winter!!

Logic atv helmet. Very good you can still wear glasses comfortably and still use your phone with it on,also has a visor for those muddy days
