Atv & quad helmets

Morning, just wondering what safely helmets some of you use while using atv and or quads? Professionally or privately.

David

I used to wear one of those crash hats that horse riders wear in cross country competitions.

First decide if you will actually wear one before spending a a large lump of cat on one.
While I would never ride a motorcycle without a helmet, not even round the garden, I ended
up never wearing the one the club bought me for the quad bike. Just seemed total over kill for what
the quad was used for which was towing a trailer full of tools, or cut hedges and small tress round the lakes.

Neil.

Thanks Neil,
I have been wearing a Petzl climbing helmet I use for tree climbing, I can't see why I can't use the Petzl, just wondering, as we have an ATV course next month and want the right hat for the day. I do use the Petzl and will continue to use a helmet, the ground we're on is very uneven and what cost do you put on your head accidents do happen.

Terrain helmet

Thanks Arron,

Just looked them up, covers everything I need, atv, climbing and chainsaw and very reasonably priced.

I have yet to see any farmer wearing a helmet on a quad, whether on private land or on the road. Most just trust to their flat cap!
Having said that, I do have a helmet, which I used to have to wear when shepherding for the local agricultural college. It was supplied by Logic.

Just make sure the standard that the helmet meets is suitable for bikes, I know that some first class helmets for one trade ane not suitable or safe for others, it is all about what they are designed to protect against.

If you have a £20 head wear a £20 helmet was always the saying I heard when biking.

However never bothered when faffing on the farm on a quad....like a few have said depends largely on land and local rules i.e. the rockier and more uneven/steep the better the helmet or FC land as per guidance.

Hi David
I use an open face motorcycle helmet with drop down visor. This gives an unrestricted view compared to a full face but still gives some face protection if using a winch etc. I paid about £30 on eBay for a known make as I wasn't too fussy about the colour (it was pink ). If you prefer a full face pic check out SHARP - THE HELMET SAFETY SCHEME
to help you choose

Thanks Vitalspark, I'm sorted now, one member on here has informed me he has a spare and not to far away, so going to buy his terrain helmet. Thanks for all the other helpful posts, it was a worth while question.

David

I am beginning to see a few wearing them up this way. even a horse riding hat is better than nothing. I know of a number of people killed in quad overturn accidents but most still have that bravado "it'll not happen to me" attitude - but if it has happen to someone else it can happen to you (metaphorical).

Most young farmers are full of bravado for everything - that why farming kills a higher percentage of people than most (all?) other industries. Peer pressure is the only way to bring about gradual change.

Friend of mine used to ride his quad without a helmet, was only a small quad 350 not like the new stuff, Any way on some steep ground it looped back on him.
He managed to lie back on the quad and struggled back to the farm house for help.

Fractured skull/Damaged spine/Damaged arm/lungs and ribs he was lucky to survive ! Always had a full face MotoX helmet on after he was better
