BASC motoring discount?

Like many others on here, I'm still a member of BASC (for my sins)

I have used their motoring discount previously with no issues, however I have recently enquired about a Ford Transit custom, only to be told that because i am a private individual who wants to lease the vehicle the BASC discount is not applicable and therefore can not be added.

I spoke to BASC and they have said that this is the first time this has come about (i surely cant be the first person to do this?)

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue and/or if there is a way it can be sorted?

Seems stupid that we get this discount but when you need it you cant have it?

I too had trouble trying to use the basc discount for a lease vehicle, although iirc I was told the opposite to what you've been told (ie, it was because I was a business user), but I don't recall the details now. Gave up on it.

seems stupid that is a perk of being with BASC but in actual fact its not because you cant use it!

I’m sure Connor will be along in a minute to clarify. It would seem to be a home goal if you can’t use the scheme. There are plenty of other organisations such as Blue Lamp or Forces Cars Direct falling over themselves to offer up good member discounts.

hopefully he can help mate. like you say seems pretty daft to have a scheme that cant be used because of how you buy the vehicle and or who you are ie, personal or business.

I guess lease isn't purchase, which would make things more complex. I have used the BASC purhase scheme a couple of times, pretty simple and the last one was 20%

Do you have to just buy the vehicle outright to get the basc discount?

Surely however you finance the deal should be irrelevant?

I have had advice back from colleagues. The BASC motoring discounts scheme applies exclusively to the purchase of new vehicles. As leased vehicles are not purchased or owned by the member, they do not qualify for the scheme. Additionally, many manufacturers offer separate incentives to encourage leasing. Lease vehicles have never been offered to BASC members under the discount scheme. We have had manufacturers advertise lease deals in BASC’s magazine Shooting and Conservation but they have never been part of the scheme. We will update the FAQs on our motoring discounts webpage to clarify that leased vehicles are not included in the scheme.

How you finance your purchase through savings, a car loan etc will be up to you and if you wish to part exchange an old vehicle or access finance from the dealer then this is to be discussed with the participating dealership during the quotation process. BASC’s role in all cases is simply to verify that the individual member is eligible to access the vehicle discount scheme. So, with all that in mind perhaps look into it again with whatever vehicle you are interested in.
