Best .308 Hunting Ammo?

123 grn sako 1/2 “ grouping and excellent knockdown on fallow and sika
good all rounder but you may get a flyer every now and then if it hits the shoulder on exit i’ve had 2 run up the neck causing front leg and neck damage
Not the first person I've heard say you get the odd flyer with 123gr sako

How'd you find that on animals? It shoots great in my rifle but I've yet to send one at a deer out of fear of what I read about them exploding. Is it all wives tales?
I’ve used 150g sst’s and they are very accurate through my t3x lite, BUT they make a mess from 60 meters upwards, I’ll be changing when we have used these up!, but the Hornady 165g ECX are fantastic on the reds in Scotland shot some hinds last season and they work perfectly ( shot up to 195 meters on the hill )

Yeah I've heard they can be a bit explosive at close ranges. I think anything below 100 meters will be neck shot anyway so I'm not too worried about that.

I'm currently using 150gr Super Hammerheads and missed a great Sika stag at 280 meters. I think I fluffed my wind call so looking for something that will buck the wind a bit better.

I've tried finding those ECX bullets but cant get them anywhere in Ireland. All we have in .308 so far that I can find us is 168gr outfitter GMX.

PPU 150 grain SP
If best = cheapest then you may be right ….. however there are lots of rifles that group PPU ammo like a shotgun and I have seen rifles where it wouldn’t even chamber! The most accurate factory load I have seen in 308 was the Norma 150 grain ballistics tip but I didn’t like the meat damage so for me it wasn’t the best. For me the best all rounder was the Barnes vortex 130g TTSX that performed well on deer and shot well in a good proportion of rifles

Easy solved with a small base die, and PPU is generally good brass

just curious ( newb ) - further up the thread someone said practice with cheap and hunt with expensive. have no issue with that sentiment, I'm kinda cheap :)

NATO seems cheap, but obviously not allowed for hunting - much of a performance difference tho. or any other reason not to use 7.62 for hunting steal and copper for deer ?

i like Norma eco strike 150gr. i have noticed that in smaller species it just goes straight through.

I am definitely still a newbie but learned a lot in the last couple of years. I would recommend a dedicated stalking rifle, getting it zeroed with decent soft point ammo (£25-35 a box) and stick with that.

If its Nato surplus it'll be ball ammo and probably not the best option for killing a deer. Expanding bullets are best suited for animals
