Best 4x4 pickup for 10 grand

Upping the budget to 15K makes the world of difference. 100K mileages come down to 50K. But it's making me wince.
Another thought. I could manage with a good 4x4 car as long as it's capable for towing.

Would I be mental to look at a ten year old Freelander 2 TD4 GS...?

But a secondhand VW Taoureg more torque for towing than a tractor and 3l diesel that’s bullet proof.

Well I've gone off L200s somewhat. Seen a couple and they seem a bit rust prone. Looked at a 2017 single cab today that only had 24,000 miles on the clock. Looked immaculate til I looked underneath. Everything that should be black - chassis, axles suspension etc were flaky brown. Not holes anywhere but my 2012 VW Caddy has less rust than that. If it had done 124,000 miles I might have thought, fair enough, and if it was all sound, have it professionally rust treated. But if it's gone like that after 24,000 easy urban miles, that is not very encouraging.
Going to look at a couple of Hiluxes and ford Ranger tomorrow. Hoping for better things.

Get a decent Hilux 2nd hand. Well achievable for under £10k, though 2nd hand prices are climbing (across all the makes and types of 2nd hand vehicles).

One thing to bear in mind that any pickup on the cusp of or over the 5 year/100k mile point WILL require a 'new something' at some imminent point - be it timing belt, prop shaft bearings, brake calipers etc. This is almost unavoidable unless you find some immaculate shop run pick up.

Heard there will be a lot of cheap Hilux imports coming to the UK, but with sand in weird places... locals selling them off due to mass upgrade to Humvee's...

Well it's done and dusted. Budget out the window, 2019 Ranger on the drive. Here it is in its natural habitat. (And don't say stationary at the side of the road).
Unwisely I touched the climate control panel and now I can't get it back to where it was before. I think this may be the first vehicle I've had where I'm actually going to have to read the owner's manual...

Budget out of the window!!!
More like you blew the roof off 😂

I did a bit.. But it was the only way to get anything approaching value for money in the current market. The day after I put the deposit down, the dealer's phone was ringing off the hook with people looking for a VAT-free pickup.

And I've no reason to doubt them. Bought from a family-run Ford dealer who've been in business since the 1930s. Originally sold by them and only ever serviced by them. And they put on a new set of tyres and did a full Waxoyle underneath as well for the price.

Fingers crossed it'll be a good 'un.

You did well to find one without the vat.

A week in I'm rather liking the Ranger. It doesn't light the back tyres up like the old pre-Euro 2.5 did with it's feisty fueling and low gearing but it's a good drive with loads of bottom end, if not that much in the middle. And it's not interested in being revved. Goes best short-shifting.
Drove from up north down to Dorset today and I'm quite impressed by the fuel economy. Durham to Shaftesbury on half a tank isn't at all bad for a 5.5 metre long 4x4. Best part of 400 miles for £60. Can't argue with that I don't think. On motorways at least, it's as good if not better than my 1.6 VW van. Proper comfortable too, and very quiet. We'll see what it's like in the muddy stuff tomorrow.
