Best breed for Deer dog

I ran into this spikey one wet morning,he obliged in allowing me to take his photo (heaps) and I filmed him also.
Both dogs were solid as and never moved a muscle even when he arched his back and strutted towards them.
My bitch in the pic.
AND he is as wild as can be too,he is no pen deer.

Dachs are rated at 49 and beagles at 72 for corens intelligent scale. I agree that beagles have great noses ive hunted with tgem for years but a lot of effort is required to make them controllable compared to dachs, which is also a hell of a lot harder than most of the HPR which are higher than 30.
From your response then a deer dog is one that sits there during the stalk quiet as a mouse and only works when required at the signal of the owner. if that is the case, as I said before a beagle is useless.
however if it is for tracking a wounded animal, with the right training then they can be brilliant.

I am a dedicated Lab man but have often pondered on the merits of a well chosen working Lab x Springer ( Springador) has anyone any experience of actually breeding and training one for deer?

Willowbank.

Pretty much. There are other issues like making sure the beagke stays on the same scent and not off after fresher scent. Plus if you want to work the beagle on the leash the can pull quite hard but no denying they have a great nose. I knew a girl that trained beagles for customs to find drugs. Very controllable but thousands of hours into it and it was a professional working dog.
