Best pattern for UK

As everyone has said, if camo works it's just as a supplement to, not a substitute for, good fieldcraft. All the same, if it has the right tones and disrupts an outline, then it has to offer some advantage. I agree on the remarkable quality of flecktarn, but as it hasn't had a mention yet I'd also note that a shooting buddy of mine wears a suit of Jack Pyke camo (the green one not the original brown) and I'm always impressed by how hard he is to see against a hedgerow or woodland. I mostly wear plain olive, but I also have one of the JP leafy mesh headnets in the same pattern and reckon it's worth having. It's cheap, light, packs up small, and keeps the mozzies off too.

A long time ago, in a training regiment far far away, we were having the then current DPM clothing demonstrated to us. We were all assembled on one side of the drill square and our Troop Sergeant told us all to turn round. While we were turned away, he had one of the lads "double" accross the square (one never "walks" on "my shaggin' drill square") and place one of the old DPM crow caps on top of a short pole on the other side. When he came back, we all had to turn back round again and try to see the cap. The background was a line of trees about 100 yards past the pole. None of us could see the cap until it was pointed out to us. From then on, I've been a great believer in DPM.
However, the deer don't care, and purely to avoid looking like a soldier, I just wear plain green clothing when out stalking.

I suppose you could go out in bright blue pinstripes and still come home with a decent bag.

Just shoot from further away..

There is nothing better than the right coloured 3d leaf suits, forget all that other tripe as they pale in comparison.

DPM is fast becoming vintage ("old school") and therefore losing some of the unhelpful would-be soldier sniper association you refer to. That said, other than my Shark Sports waterproof sticks & leafs camo outfit I would never wear a DPM jacket and trousers at the same time.
