Best use of a wet weekend šŸ˜Ž

Back in July I bought an Alpex 4k LRF & popped it on my 6.5x47 then zeroed it with some 120gn Sierra Pro-Hunters I had loaded up.

Now the 6.5 is a dual purpose rifle built specifically for use both as a ā€˜Class B’ conforming rifle for BSRC competitions when in a standard wooden stock but which doubles as a long range rifle when removed & bolted up in a modified AICS stock.

As it happened, the rifle was set up in the AICS stock when the new scope went on so that’s how I’ve been using it this doe season. However, for those who are not familiar, the AICS stock is no lightweight & has been a significant limitation to my use of the rifle.

Any hoo, as stalker62 would say, I persevered & shot a fair few deer before I ran out of ammunition & decided it was time to sort out a dedicated set up for the rifle/scope combination.

I’d always planned on setting it up in an original style GRS Sporter stock so it handles the same as my 308W which lives in one I modified from a Howa 1500 short action inlet. After a bit of searching one came up second hand at Edinburgh Rifles & was even inlet for the M595 too, so bought this & stashed it away.

This weekend I’ve epoxied the bedding pillars into place & today decided to mock everything up to make sure it works before a do the full bedding job next weekend (unless it’s not wet & windy & I go out shooting fallow that is).

This is what it looks like & for those who are interested, the rifle was rebarrelled from 308 to 6.5x47 Lapua using a 26ā€ 1:8 twist Bartlein custom profile barrel, it was then ceracoated by James at Jager Sporting Arms. The modification to the bolt handle was done by Norman Clark Gunsmiths - he’s done several for me over the years.

The picatinny rail on it is a 0moa EGW one & is fitted using 6/48 countersunk screws (the 308 uses M3.5 screws - if only Tikka were consistent šŸ™„). The rings are Burris XTR Signature medium height so I can mechanically align the LRF to where I want it & to ensure clearance for the other attachment on the rail - anyone care to guess what that’s for btw?

I’m sure the purists will have a field day telling me I shouldn’t have fitted a picatinny rail, that the scope is too high & the rings are terrible, but the choice was deliberate. The stock has an adjustable cheek piece so cheek weld isn’t an issue & the scope will be zeroed at 200 yards so LRF/ballistic calcs out to, say, 400 yards aren’t really going to be an issue either.

The stock colour is intriguing as it’s not one I’ve ever seen in the GRS line up but I guess they had some laminate that was supposed to be Nordic Wolf (dark grey) but the stain hadn’t taken properly. Anyway, I like it & think it complements the colour of the ceracoat nicely (think someone else had some pics of one and the same colour recently too?).

Hope you like what I’ve done šŸ‘

Nice but if you ditched the rail and used the dovetails provided you could drop the scope considerably?
I realise this is unfashionable but removing an interface that doesn’t appear necessary is good practice

The rail is there for two reasons - number one, the scope has been fitted using standard Optilock rings & bases fitted to the integral dovetail but this puts the LRF box high & way to the right of the cross hair as between them they’re not aligned with the bore. I’m planning to correct that using the Burris rings.

Number two, the rail allows me to fit the little attachment behind the front ring - no-one has guessed what it’s for yet, who will be the first??

So the rail isn’t an unnecessary interface & wont be getting removed - the stock is adjustable so the extra 1/4ā€ or so of scope height is easily accommodated šŸ‘

šŸ‘ Sounds well thought through. I’m a great fan of Burris signature Zees (but hate rails).

The "little attachment" could be related to changing the scope for a more conventional unit. As in an abutment point for the front ring that would ensure minimum knob twiddling when fine tuning zero?

I can see your logic, but incorrect answer I’m afraid.

A little clue… remember it’s a day/night scope.

Do you use it to secure each end of a wraparound elastic band to stop the magazine from rattling and unintentional ejection??

I'm still in shock from your move to 21st- Century optics, hence the possibly crass stab in the dark!

K - it’s a Tikka M595, the mags don’t rattle or drop out šŸ˜‚

I’ve surprised myself too, it wasn’t a decision taken lightly - last winter I missed opportunities at does because I couldn’t see them properly in the scope. Aside from a full on ā€˜Hubble’ I think I’ve reached the limit of proper glass, it’s certainly secured a few very early or very late beasties. The Alpex however has simply thrown open the curtains & let the light in again, allowing use of the whole ā€˜magic hour’ regardless of whether there’s moon, cloud cover, etc. - my cull figures for November reflect this!

Bingo šŸ‘

It’s for a Caldwell case catcher so I don’t lose my brass in the dark if I get the chance at more than one shot. It’ll also stop me having to scrabble about looking for a live round when unloading with fingers like icycles 🄶
Oh the pain and swearing that would have saved me on wintery nights , off to do some research .

Got 50 rounds loaded up with 120gn Pro-Hunters now so fingers crossed enough to keep me going for a bit at least. Next it’s off to the range on Sunday to get the scope aligned with the LRF & then get it zeroed šŸ‘Œ

Have asked on the bottom of another thread, but will ask again, has anyone got the bullet data to go into Quickload for the Sako 120gn Powerhead Blade bullet please?? I’d like to try them once I’ve used this lot of Pro-Hunters up but the data seems to be unobtainable šŸ™
