Wanted: Black Leather Offcut

Possibly one for the knife makers on here, I'm looking for a piece of black leather to repair a puncture in a truck bed cover. Doesn't have to be thick, and probably need a 3 inch square. Happy to pay whatever is reasonable + postage

My stitching skills also leave something to be desired, so taking recommendations for leather-to-leather adhesives.

Cheers,

When you say "not thick", roughly what thickness is the rest of the truck bed cover, and is it stiff or flexible?

I have some black leather hides originally intended for Connolly leather, including some offcuts.

Regarding adhesives, I tend to use Evo-stick impact adhesive, but that's just for holding the leather together sufficiently long enough that I can then saddle-stitch it. I doubt you'll get away with just adhesive, though you might give Aquasure+SR a try.

Cannot imagine a truck bed cover being made from hide Unless for a Rolls Royce pickup I reckon it must be synthetic. I suggest you do the ciggy lighter test on the original cover first.

I could prbably dig out some offcuts and send you some leather but I don't think it sounds the best material.

Get some vinyl or similar material and then use something like Evo Stick Impact Adhesive for a decent and easy permanent bond.

I'd say it's 2mm leather, though it has a canvas backing to it. It's flexible, designed to be rolled up when the bed is in use.

Will consider vinyl but would like to preserve the look (despite the patch job) as much as possible.

Appreciate the advice on adhesives from you both

From how it's described I'd concur with the others here that it's likely synthetic rather than leather. If it's being exposed to rain, etc. then synthetic will be a lot more resilient.

Should you decide you want to give leather a try then PM me with your address and I can send a 3" square cutting to you.

Yes, looking at the photos I'd say it's definitely synthetic.

Something like this:

I definitely would not use vegtable tanned leather on that. You want a waterproof synthetic. I get that you want to preserve the looks but I would probably butcher a bike inner tube and use some waterproof contact adhesive to sort it out. Function is what you want but I get that form is also important if the vehicle is newish.
