Well all just wondering am I correct in saying that we dont have a Book revew in the sub sections.
I like to read real books, not online stuff, it doesn't have to be all about Deer, Foxes ect there is such a wide variety of subjects.

Its just a thought, what are the options of SD members.

Blood Meridian,a superb descriptive tale of old West scalp hunters.

“A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or crane feathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeon tailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust and many with their braids spliced up with the hair of other beasts until they trailed upon the ground and their horses' ears and tails worked with bits of brightly colored cloth and one whose horse's whole head was painted crimson red and all the horsemen's faces gaudy and grotesque with daubings like a company of mounted clowns, death hilarious, all howling in a barbarous tongue and riding down upon them like a horde from a hell more horrible yet than the brimstone land of Christian reckoning, screeching and yammering and clothed in smoke like those vaporous beings in regions beyond right knowing where the eye wanders and the lip jerks and drools.”
― Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West

I tend to be mainly historical and factual nowadays.

One of the most beautifully written works that I have read recently was "Dark Water: Flood and Redemption in the City of Masterpieces" by Robert Clark; an examination of the city of Florence and its people / history / art centering around the disasterous flood of November 1966.

Clearly a devotee of the long sentence.

Hmmm.
Reminds me more of many years ago watching Mrs FB and her pals emerging from our sailing club after a girls’ night out.

At least there are a few commas to give you an opportunity to snatch a quick breath.
As Cormac McCarthy is acknowledged as a literary giant Tim I feel you may be better served by picking the not so literary inclined residents on the SD that don`t know wtf a comma is ha ha ha.

I have been reading as much as I can find about the Vietnam War from the point of view of the people involved. Many a good historically accurate read from the American troops, helicopter pilots, grunts, marines and SF. I am a bit of a nerd about the impressionist painters and there are many great art history books worth a read. If anyone has any recommendation on those subject of current interest, I would be grateful to hear them.

I don't always have the time to read (other than Mister Men for my almost 1 year old!) so I enjoy an audiobook on the commute.

A few I've enjoyed recently:
Ice Station Zebra
The Godfather
American Gods
Erebus - the story of a ship

Annie Jacobsen has been an interesting author to follow. She has written extensively on the CIA and other interesting topics.
Area 51 covers a lot of the history of Area 51 from the early days, including the development of the A12 and SR71.
Surprise Kill Vanish covers direct action from the CIA and the relationship between that organisation and contractors/special forces. It focuses quite heavily on Vietnam.
Operation Paperclip which covers the recruitment of Nazi scientists to the US and especially NASA during the post war period.

See my comment above reference Surprise Kill Vanish.

Start a book review/recommendation thread in the Off Topic section and give some funky title like “The Name Of The Prose” or some such.
