Mentioned it on another post but I would recommend

Working with Dogs for Deer by Nials Sondergaard

It is pricey at £30 but you only need to buy it once.

I got mine through the BDS website shop.

All the best

Try these, although others I am sure can advise better:

Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer - John Jeanneney - ISBN 0-9725089-0-2: This is THE textbook on dogs for deer (and bears!)

Tracking Wounded Deer - Richard P. Smith - ISBN 0-9617407-7-9: More about tracking wounded deer in general, than specifically tracking them with dogs. Good discussion around recognising the different types of blood/trails

Finding Wounded Deer - John Trout Jr - ISBN 1-58011-190-4: Again, more about recognising the different wounds than tracking with dogs.

The Specialist Gundog - Guy Wallace - ISBN 0-948253-82-7: I don't know if this is the book you mean, but it has a good chapter on dogs for deer stalking. Like him or hate him, Guy Wallace's opinions on dogs (and their owners) makes for a very interesting read

Now if only I can train my cocker spaniel to read these blasted books.....

as Ben p has already said
Niels Sondergaard ' Working with dogs for deer '

and one of willie-gunn's choices
Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer - John Jeanneney - ISBN 0-9725089-0-2: This is THE textbook on dogs for deer (and bears!)

both excellent and informative reads with lots of helpfull training guides, that cover everything from puppyhood up to a trained dog
you won't go wrong with either or both
there are others out there the chioce is yours

I've tried the DVD, but the poor cocker has a problem getting the case open! Then she demands that I go and get her a Kia-Ora and some Butterkist popcorn :)

Guy Wallace also wrote another book The Versatile Gundog.
I got my local library to order it in and borrowed it on several occasions. I know that Guy is not to everybody's taste, but I enjoyed the book and found it very useful. Have a look on Amazon it isn't very expensive.

You're right - that's another good book by Mr Wallace. Sometimes his overuse of exclamation marks winds me up, but his books are the sort where I'll recite a passage to my wife and say "does this sound familiar". He talks a lot of common sense.

I keep thinking about attending one of his courses....

I found that the neils sondergard book complimented the guy wallace book very well. I have read most of the other books mentioned but think these 2 together provide good info and pointers.
