Bushnell Professional Boresighter, a quickfire review

Hi all,

With the impending ammo/reloading component famine I decided to try the following product, the Bushnell Professional Boresighter.

Regrettably, I paid the eye-water Amazon price of just under £140 delivered. However, they were the only source that I could find that would ship to me. It appears that they are now discontinued in favour of laser boresighters (bleh! 🤢).

However, with the current prices of loaded ammo and components, you could save that money over the course of a few years (or decades 😐).

What do you get in the kit?

So, you get three adjustable augers that go into the barrel (.22-.27, 7mm-.35, .35-.45) and one fixed .177 one which is so pathetic I wonder why they bothered with it (I would avoid the 'deluxe' version of the Bushnell boresighter as all the augers are fixed, if they are of a similar quality).

You also get the 'viewing module'.

So, how does it work?

It's a bit of a fiddly thing to setup, as the viewing module needs to be tightened onto the adjustable auger, which has a flat milled onto it.

Now, you have to insert the auger into the barrel as shown (up to the tapered shoulder) and tighten it to expand the auger.

Now, with the auger expanded and tight in the barrel, you tighten the viewing module onto the flat and line them up, perpendicular to the axis of the bore (in theory anyway, as this is difficult to do by hand and would be greatly assisted by an extra pair.)

The viewing module's internal reticle looks like this:

You then proceed to line it up with the reticle of the scope along the horizontal plane.

Each square is supposed to correspond with 4 inches of travel at 100 yards.

I have checked the zero of a rifle that I know to be correct, and then used it to verify the scope mounting/zeroing of a new one.

Time will tell if this was a good investment!

The expanding mandrel does not work on .22LR barrels.

I've got a similar Tasco one with different style arbors (one for each bore size).
I like the expander design and have considered getting some made up to use on mine.
Saying that, as it is, my Tasco will always get me within four inches at fifty yards with the first bullet.
This week I used it on a friend's 270 and the first bullet was just half an inch left of dead centre.
These units really do pay for themselves in use.
Ian
