Calibre suitable for crocodiles

Beard is the heir to a railroad fortune. I ran into Beard on Long Island, New York, while fishing. Most of the beaches are private, and he apparently owned a large estate there. I was chased off several places and quizzed that many more, just for anchoring a beat up and rented 12-foot Grumman aluminum V-hull "too near" their shoreline. Beard was very polite and curious about how the fishing was going. I think he discovered the model, Cindy Crawford, there, while she and some friends were hanging out. He forwarded some photos to a fashion model photographer friend, and she was off to fame and fortune.

More crocs in Australia met their maker via "rule 303" than any other caliber.
My 303 was bought 40 years ago by a good friend who sailing around the 'top end' with his wife and a couple of friends. He and his mate bought 2 rifles to take when they went ashore for water to fend off crocs. The Queensland gun dealer said that either the 303 or the 30-06 Garand his mate bought were ideal for crocs. It came with 150 rounds of 1942 Dominion Arms MkVIIs.
He had a go with his at a remote beach, fired 3 rounds that he said "scared the **** out of me" and never used it again.
I got a near unused Savage made 1942 No4 Mk1 with a Lithgow target barrel for 1 carton of beer.
Haven't shot any crocs with it , sorry.

End of the Game is a true classic of African literature the haunting pictures are remarkable. I first read the book in an African camp and can remember it having a deep impression on me.

No expert, but I think the 30-06 allows for much more accurate shots compared to the 375 H&H. Purely from recoil point of view. A good strong 30 calibre bullet has excellent penetration. A 30-06 with 180-200-220 grain bullets is a very versatile calibre.

Based entirely on others experiences rather than my own, Kevin Robertson who wrote a perfect shot regarded the 30 calls as being too small for large crocs. Any of the 338 or .35 cartridges and premium bullets being advised. I guess the caveat is that this will truly be a game of accuracy. I bet following up a bad shot is interesting!

I used my 375 H&H as PH friend said the 308 was ok but not the best. So have used both 250 and 300 grain sp all did the job with authority no monsters but wouldn't have fancied a tumble with any of them.

You might want to read some books by a guy called Tom Cole. He was a Brit that emigrated to Australia years ago and did many jobs including being a buffalo and croc hunter. Amazing bloke with some incredible stories. If I remember rightly for shooting buff they would gallop flat out next to them then while riding one handed they would shoot the buffs in the head/neck with a 308 rifle with the other hand! He also went into some detail about shooting crocs which might be helpful. Fascinating books to read either way.
