Cape buff bull opinions.

Firstly what ever is legal where you are. The buff I shot dropped to the first shot but the PH insisted I followed it up with another, he said the first had done the job but many a hunter been hurt by a dead Cape buffalo.
@GBR66 never too old just how fit you are.

Or whether you have run out of brave pills!

308 . 180g
Semi automatic
30 round mag .full .
Red dot .
Start with a double tap .
Never done it never will .
But that would be my choice.
Lightweight fell running boots .

Don't forget poachers put big stuff down with authority using AKs

Poachers? Authority? Multiple shots all over and anywhere in the animals bodies until dead from many reports that I have read.
Generally a whole magazine through the lungs, only skin and thin muscle to penetrate between two ribs. Then wait for the vultures to start circling and go find it.
Bullets designed to wound/cripple humans don't perform too well on big game. Have seen guys file the point down on FMJ and use them. Don't work with the authority of a properly designed bullet.

I always wanted to try Buffalo, but having taken a long period off stalking to indulge children's equestrian sport, now I am back into it I am glad I am too old to start when I read a line like that! I think I will stick with game that doesn't take offence at being shot at.....
Heres a way to combine riding with buffalo hunting for you!. Very cool shooting by the PH and fortunately the injuries sustained were minor!

And another prolonged charge from Zimbabwe.... They can be hard to stop!

Ian, it is just because that PH is not as fast as you when the buffalo awakes...

Basically any rifle like a .308 or 30-06 can shoot buffalo, not necessary having the stopping power in them, but still can kill them. I rather hunt with a client where i indicate where to shoot with a smaller caliber that a bigger rifle and he is scared to pull the trigger if you know what i mean by this?

aim small shoot small basically...

I have seen buff in the bush and they are very, very, very large. A 30-06, even with 220 gr is not enough gun. 375 H and H would be my choice. I appreciate that you do not feel recoil in the hunting moment, but you are much more likely to be zeroed accurately and fire without flinching than if you use a monster caliber. Open sights would help if the animal was right on top of you, but less accurate than a scope. You very often see poor first shots on U-tube with un-scoped monster doubles.

Yes great video....I gather from earlier chat on this it was a bow hunt and the buff was objecting to an arrow......I definitely won't be trying that!

i wouldn't either use a 30-06 to hunt buffalo, and you are 100% correct not enough gun on a charge...but it is very possible to kill that buffalo with a premium bullet on a 30-06 or as i did my self with a .308 on 180gr solids...to hunt BIG 5 in any African country and per the area where the hunt is outfitted are always bound to a min. rifle caliber...
