Hi , have a 1981 XL500 that have now become 40 year old does anyone know what I need to do with the DVLA to register it as a classic ?

Thanks Steve

Lots of luck and patience. Think the forms are online to change the taxation class, but they are pedantic in the extreme.

Have you got a log book for it? I imported my 73 F100 from the states and just put its tax classification as historic when I applied for a V5.
Is no more difficult than changing the colour on the V5.

Fill out a V112 at the same time for MOT exemption. You can still choose to MOT it but it’s no longer a requirement for tax / insurance.

Changed the taxation class on the last discovery I bought. After six calls to the dvla asking for advice the boy at the local post office told me the easiest way to do it is to just apply for a replacement V5. All you need is the chassis number and reg.

My first road-legal bike was an XL 250 S bought it new in 1979, it was my only form of transport at that time when I was 17.
Used it hail, rain, and snow.
I wish I kept a hold of all the old bikes I had in the 70/80s when you see what money they are making now

I cannot answer your questions - but what a bike ! I love those beasts. Does it have a decompressor to line up TDC ?

VJMC .....vintage Japanese motorcycle club , are helpful in many ways and have a forum

Classic Bike Magazine is worth getting and bikes like yours regularly feature now

Yes have the logbook thank you for the advice👍

I have a 1980 Land Rover. It was first registered on 1 August 1980.

Looking at the DVLA web site (and adding a year as the website references vehicles first registered on/before 8 January 1980), I will not be able to move it to classic car status until April 2021

Here's the relevant section on the DVLA web site, and it very helpfully sets out what needs to be done.

Historic (classic) vehicles: MOT and vehicle tax
