Contact Lenses

I have worn varifocal glasses for many years but cant wear them when stalking as I see the cross hairs as "split" in my scope. As my distance vision has not been not too bad I just don't wear my glasses when I am stalking.

However I no find my distance vison is getting worse and don't want the faff of taking glasses on and off when out. I have always resisted the very thought of putting something in my eyes but have heard that contact lenses overcome the problem of split cross hairs.

I would be grateful to hear the experiences of others.

would it not be possible to fit a corrective lens to your scope eyepiece, similar to what others do with night vision optics, ?
I believe its just a suitable mag reading glass lens.

tell the optician what you need … mine was very helpful, distance contacts supplied and if I need to read something I just slip my glasses on even with the contact in.

No idea, but open to further info. However a single vison corrective lense wouldn't work for me as I need varifocals

Had a guy with us shooting a comp entry fee was around £200 plus flights plus hotel , on his first stage he got a DNF as he had lost his contact and did't have a backup plan . after that he always used glasses to shoot in lol

Couldn't stalk without my contact lenses. Too many waisted years with glasses misting up and probably spooking deer. Bugger to put in especially at 5am b4 your lifted up at the hotel by the keeper and pressed for time ;)
The cousins wifey is an eye consultant and tells me laser eye corrective procedure is a temporary job at best if you're older than 30 for some reason or I'd have had it done.

Thanks, I have an appointment with my optician next week to discuss. Want I am trying to avoid is needing my spec at all when out stalking as I have lost and damaged a few pair over the years doing the old on/off routine!

ok I admit I'm certainly no optician, but many people have told me with a simple corrective lens on the eyepiece.
I think "Bruce and Russ" from here did a feature on the subject on youtube, but I cant find it.

My contact lenses are monthly disposables, but I always make each pair last a bit more than a month. That way I have managed to accumulate a few spare sets, of which I keep some in my vehicle. I also have a pair of glasses for emergencies. However, in 30 years of lense wearing I've never lost one. Having spares is handy though, for example if you're camping out on your ground and you don't want the faff of cleaning lenses you just chuck a pair at the end of the day and bang in a brand new set in the morning.

Daily contact lenses for shooting are the best, recommend them 100% and wouldn’t consider glasses, no fogging up or glasses getting rain drops on them or even breaking them, and they’re fine to get in once you’ve done it a few times

I've just recently been through the same thing - using glasses for reading/close up but now my distance vision is starting to go as well.

Went to the local optician and explained that I would be keen on wearing contacts when I'm out and about shooting/stalking/fishing or even simply just walking as glasses would be a pain.

We decided that daily disposable contacts would probably suit me best and we experimented with various combinations - they do varifocal contacts which I tried but they made me sick though perhaps I might have got used to them, it is also possible for some people to wear a distance prescription in one eye and a close prescription in the other but again that made me feel sick, and so I ended up simply wearing the distance prescription in both eyes. I've got to say they are great and it is worth bearing in mind that they help with everything from about arm's length to infinity so, for example, I can use a computer with the distance contacts in as the screen is far enough away that they bring it into focus for me. So for everything but the most close work I use the contacts and if necessary I put the reading glasses on for really small or really close stuff - I've never needed the reading glasses when fishing or shooting.

Putting the contacts in was a bit of a trial for me at the start but after some practise it just sort of clicked and now I can just pop them in no bother and I like just being able to throw the disposable ones away after a day - plus they are inexpensive so I can keep a few spares in the car etc. My feeling is that they move my groups a little to the left, though I have no trouble using the scope, and also that they reduce the light a little right on last light but as they aren't varifocal so I get no splitting of the image.

So, you probably have lots of options but it takes a little bit of commitment and time to find exactly what works for you and to get into the way of using it but if you are willing to put in a little bit of time and effort, and be a little flexible in your requirements, then I would be certain that you will find a solution that works for you.

Speak to the optician tell him you are after mono-vision. I have a right lens for reading , and a left lens for distance. The brain just works it out for itself. Unfortunately when my lenses were set up it was the right for reading , so hsd to adjust the scope loads. I've since got a right distance lens to use , just means I have to hold the phone away a bit to read messages , or I could just get a pair of cheap readers. The set-up above is quite common.

Varifocal Contacts!!

Sadly at "our" age all vision correction is a compromise. I find I can use daily disposable and still read a paper at arms length, but with my monthy distance lenses, I can't. If I wear two varifocal lenses, I can't focus that well at distance so I now have left eye single vision, right varifocal. Does well.

I would love to use contacts for stalking and bird watching. I have tried and tried but simply cannot get on with them. Unfortunately they are not for everyone.
I won't bore you with all the gory details but its steamed up, smeared etc. etc. specs for me. I don't have any problems using varifocals though. We are all different.
