Controversial question are gun shops good enough

Well going to your local RFD ain't like the McDonald's drive through. Usually you've got to wait while the person behind the counter chats interminably to the latest customer, who wants to look at and mount every shotgun in the shop. Which is when you get buttonholed by the shop lurker. He will regale you of tales of a humoungous red stag dragged singlehanded over a munro after he's shot them to get to the Argo, of actually shooting at Sandringham with the King and actually His Majesty can't shoot for toffee and the time he shot all sorts of beasts in Africa and the time he...........all stories you heard last time you came in just to see if they've got any small rifle primers (which they didn't). And lo and behold, they still haven't got any this time it eventually transpires. And now the wife has started calling you thinking you've been kidnapped because she and the kids have finished shopping and are at the car and where the hell are you and she hasn't got a key and it's starting to rain....

So mail order has it's advantages. But still, I would advocate buying what you can at your local RFD. Mostly.

Pahahahahahaha brilliant…… the munro was a nice touch 😂👏🏻

I have also had the call from the car asking me if a ransom was required and should she turn off the engine after its idled a quarter of a tank for my quick “pop in” for some HMR rounds

Herein contained are a lot of home truths. Best buying experiences have been from other owners. Else, all other RFD’s (bar 3 smaller ones) have been incredibly difficult to deal with. Lying has been the most common theme amongst them as well.

I will never forgot buying my first gun the dealer told me an outright lie, when I confronted him about it when my licence came through he was completely in denial and made it out that I was the one lying. 10 or so years later I haven't forgotten and make a point of telling everyone when the mention of gun shops or shooting come up.

Funny thing.

I was recently in a Gunshop in XXXXX.

I was only buying ammunition.

I was kept there for an hour and a half (I know, I know, but I am British, and too polite to say anything), whilst he berated me about how bad the local Constabulary were. I got it all. Both barrels.

I am never, ever going back.

Life is too short, and I am running out of time to spend it listening to hours of that shite again....
He was only assisting you with your enquiries.

Was that stag shot with a .222 by any chance?

Gunshop’s no different to many other shops within the retail sector you get the good/bad/ugly and on that basis you always have the option to vote with your feet. I am very lucky to have 2 outstanding Gunshop’s near me Donaldsons Guns at MK and Stephen and Son at Leighton Buzzard and that’s where I spend my money
I think it is a bit different because you're forced to go to RFDs/gunshops due to the laws, to an extent.

Which is good on a way because it's nice to go to an actual shop not just online/Amazon. Even if they never have what you want.....

Gun shop: you need a CR and not a 6,5. Why, well we have it here
Web shop: in stock but stocked in a remote warehouse in ... Bulgaria

Unfortunately I have to agree.
There are several shops that ripped me off or tried to, one dealer in particular (with whom I dealt with frequently) but who I will never deal with again.

Selling a gun can be a real challenge.
Some places sell on commission but never seem to get a decent price, yet when you want to buy from them, the prices are sky high........suspicious!

Internet buying is great but some RFD take forever to respond. I submitted an enquiry last Tuesday about a brand new rifle - still waiting for a reply!

I’ve previously recovered money from a dealer having highlighted my keenness to go to court and expose their lies and dangerous practices. Still, not my idea of fun. As is the ringing a dealer to find a gun advertised for the last 3 weeks amazingly has a buyer for it who rang an hour before me. How many times has that happened? Amazing 😀

Been in the market for FAC Air but now sorted.Vast majority of emails were answered in a reasonable time scale.
Patience is a virtue when dealing with the Shooting Industry,it does get frustrating but normally turns out OK in the end.
